Norton Internet Security 2006 update. I may have found a bug
in the software. From the main NIS Menu the sixth entry down is the Security Inspector. Click on it then click Scan Now to use it. Though the Security Inspector is a helpful tool that checks your Password Strength, Browser Settings, IM, Shared Files the scan for the IP Hosts Files may have a bug in it. The scan could pick up all hosts files that have been entered even those that are entered as security risks! For example if Spybot or Ad-Aware entered those values in the Hosts file as risks then NIS will remove them! Also NIS may have also removed my Localhost itself!

Yes. Once again His Lordship C.G., IT God of The Lounge has shown His glory!

2. Whoo! I'm glad I haven't updated to 2006 yet.
Please tell me that it's not doing this on the 2005 version. :begandplead:

3. No. NIS 2005 doesn't have the Security Inspector.

4. A bug? Yes, the bug is called "Norton Internet Security".
I would never use it.

5. The problem I've had with NIS is the software is too big for the
average person's PC. Overall I think it's pretty good but ..... it's bloated. Also their "Tech Support" STINKS!

6. Therefore
I use Zonelabs on my machine. I remember when you could easily by-pass NIS if the hostile file just had a name that was recognized as being totally harmless.

And I agree that it's quite a ressource hog.

7. I remember that. Have you been to
www.grc.com ? It has some good tools there.

Yes, I just saw 'Leak Test' on it, NIS failed then.

11. Yes, but if I remember correctly,
this was NIS 2002 or so. I don't think it does anymore.

I'm relatively happy with Zonelabs Security Suite so far. Seems not to use too much ressources, but can be quite annoying after an upgrade. Several times I had to adjust all of my settings again, and it was asking permissions for every program again.

But so far, no virus infections, no intruders. Tracking cookies seem to be a problem though that only are caught when you do a system scan (which makes my fan loud and takes 3 hours every Friday).

12. I had the same problem with ZA. That's why I got rid of it.

14. I understand that,
but it seems to better now with the newest upgrade, and the reason I don't use NIS anymore is simply because it sloweed everything down so much.

We know that we will never be 100% happy with anything they offer us, but it seems we have to live with it. Somewhat.

Why not make anything totally secure? No leaks, nothing. No viruses, no spyware. No need for anything like this. Wishful thinking. It just gets worse.

There was a time, 1995 I think, when I only got e-mail from friends. Now I get 200-300 spam e-mails a day, not counting the ones that are caught by the mailserver.

Good days, eh?
