We have what seems to be a family of ghosts who live downstairs (the downstairs area of our house consists of two bedrooms that we use for storage and the laundry room).

We hear them now and then (though not so much as we used to) and they occasionally come upstairs (I once distinctly felt someone sit on the sofa beside me).

Whenever I go downstairs, I say hello. Since I began doing that, they've been quieter. Before, we'd hear them speaking (always sounded like arguing but you couldn't hear the exact words) and now and then, I'd hear a child crying. Now they seem more mellow. Maybe because we acknowledge them. I don't know.
