5. Free American broadband!
Salon.com

http://www.salon.com/tech/feature/2005/10/18/broadband/index.html

In France, you can get super-fast DSL, unlimited phone service and 100 TV channels for a mere $38 a month. Why does the same thing cost so much more in the U.S.?

Next time you sit down to pay your cable-modem or DSL bill, consider this: Most Japanese consumers can get an Internet connection that's 16 times faster than the typical American DSL line for a mere $22 per month.

Across the globe, it's the same story. In France, DSL service that is 10 times faster than the typical United States connection; 100 TV channels and unlimited telephone service cost only $38 per month. In South Korea, super-fast connections are common for less than $30 per month. Places as diverse as Finland, Canada and Hong Kong all have much faster Internet connections at a lower cost than what is available here. In fact, since 2001, the U.S. has slipped from fourth to 16th in the world in broadband use per capita. While other countries are taking advantage of the technological, business and education opportunities of the broadband era, America remains lost in transition.

How did this happen? Why has the U.S. fallen so far behind the rest of its economic peers? The answer is simple. These nations all have something the U.S. lacks: a national broadband policy, one that actively encourages competition among providers, leading to lower consumer prices and better service.

9. Thank you Verizon! The $14.95 did it for me!
It was a no-brainer when I was paying 12.95 already for the "express" dial up. The ability to finally watch video is so sweet!

10. I live in the middle of nowhere
Dialup was insufferable. It took sometimes hours to connect, and if you were on between 7p-10p, you were most assuredly going to be knocked offline.
Then we got cable.
Our cable speed was basically what dialup should have been and cost $40 a month.
We just got DSL in our area about 4 months ago.
I changed from cable to DSL--and the speed is great. I love it and I could use my existing router and network system.
The only difference between cable and DSL (other than the DSL is faster) is that I have to reboot more often. Not as often as I did with dialup, but much more than cable.
Nice part is...this is only costing me $17 a month, which is $3 cheaper than my dialup and $23 cheaper than my cable!:toast:

20. It's early but I'm thinking very near Tampa.
That fairly tight HP ridge in the western gulf is, I believe, the key...if it moves NE as fast as I think it will, Wilma will get nudged more northerly...we'll see. :D

12. I have 1.5 kb
I'm paying $40 a month. Should I be looking for new service? I don't even know if I can get other service in my area. I switched a few years ago, I even had Starband for a while before that, lol. DSL is magnifico!!!

13. Well I have DSL and it's every bit as slow as my old dial-up. I DO NOT
recommend SBC Global / Yahoo. The minute I can get out of this contract I'm history.
50 times faster.

My ass.

Maybe your PC is being slowed down by spyware.

Mine was. One evening at two a.m. my computer was on and I was sitting
in a chair reading. Suddenly my hard disk started running and running
and running, and the network monitor showed a lot of activity.

Check out free anti-spyware programs here:

Also, I've had a lot of problems solved by simply deleting the cookies.

16. Dang, you have some other problems then
I have Yahoo SBC DSL and it's much faster than dialup. Not as fast as Comcast, but more reliable.

Little Sis and I drove down your hwy, my favorite number, about two Sundays ago. Only had an hour to check out markers in the town cemetery south of you before getting back to town for lunch with the kids and Dad. But I did think about you as we spead south past your turn-off.

Best to you.

19. I thought you'd have WiMax down there by now.
Maybe you should strike a deal with Google and partner it around the lake. I know a good tower site on the east side. On Yonkers hill. Used to be able to see Williams Center on an early clear morning with the sun on it. Or heck, just a spark gap. Couldn't be too much in the neighborhood to interfer with. <grin>
