Until now, I never lived in a state which required party registration for the primaries, let alone ask for it for normal registration. Back in 1988 for Super Tuesday in Virginia, I had to declare which party I was voting for only at the polling place (I declared Democrat and voted for Paul Simon - remember him?), and in Washington state, no party preference was required in any circumstance.
In Arizona, you can declare being a Democrat, Republican, or Independent when registering to vote. But in order to vote in the primaries, you cannot be Independent. Well, I never have voted Republican in my life, and since this wasn't an oral declaration like in Virginia's Super Tuesday, I am a registered Democrat for the first time in my 18 years of voting - half my life thus far.
I have also volunteered to work the polls for the February primaries, and for the Big One in November.
Plus, Democrat Paul Babbitt, the brother of former AZ governor and Clinton Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt, is running for Congress in my district, Arizona's 1st, next year against first term incumbent and GOP sleazebag (pardon the redundancy, but this guy is horrible) Rick Renzi. Renzi only won by fewer than 3% last year, so Babbitt can take it. I plan to help with his campaign.
I am proud to be a Democrat in my new home state of Arizona. :-)
