Gay people come out and talk to me I want more gay friends
Seriously I have one cool intelligent friend, a great girlfriend yeah, but all my friends from college that were fun to talk to have all moved.

I have noticed most gay people I talk to are smart and funny as hell I want more of that sort of influence immediately, just be around someone who doesn't give a shit what other people think and are just out to laugh and have a good freakin time.

Applications for gay friends are being accepted immediately.

5. freakin A! m'man!! I love New York gays the most
transplanted Bronxite over here! hey no offense to gays from other parts of the nation, I think it's my exposure to New York gays is what has made me really bond with gay people, if only we weren't entire coasts apart you can bet I'd be asking to meet up with my girl and I somewhere and just spend the evening laughing it up at the bush admin!

9. NYC gays rule! heehe
I'd be NOWHERE without my gay friends in the city (I work on the UWS, live in Westchester, right above the Bronx by the way).

The gay community is very united, we depend on friends more than most people, since many gays have been rejected by their own families.

go join PFLAG ( www.pflag.org ).

Look for your local chapter.

We are Parents, Family, FRIENDS, of Lesbians and Gays.

We support, we advocate, and we educate.

I'm a board member of my local PFLAG, and I provide financial support to the national org.

I also joined a welcoming and affirming church ( www.rsintl.org ).

Other churches that affirm, honor all paths: www.uua.org

And, of course, GLBTQ DUers are the best!

7. Thanks for the info we joined a similar group actually
just before the election, but they were most of a temporary group unfortunately it seems, but you know that's a good idea. This holiday season we'll look into that.

If there is no local PFLAG, then start one. My friend did. We are struggling a bit down here (Temecula Valley, Ca). We are a very red pocket in a very blue state. We're getting the chapter going - slowly but surely.

8. I had more gay friends in the Army than just about any other time...
I was thinking about some I had from years past. Other than a few I had in high school and college, I had more in the Army.

Go figure

10. What are they, like pets?
I guess I'm testy this evening, and noahmijo I apologize in advance...but the generalizations are really kind of....

To me this is akin to "I have noticed all the black people I know can dance really well and I want to be around people who are in shape and keep up with me, so black people, talk to me!"

11. hey it's cool I understand why you're taking this sentiment
They're not pets to me but they are unique and really really cool people to me.

Hey I'm living in a 90%+ Repug area and where I used to live (and would still be living if I wasn't forced to move from NYC by parents) I had all sorts of friends of all sorts of colors (on some days certain friends went from being white to purple but that was usually thursday nights)

At the moment I was just listening to my girlfriend talk about how she just spoke with one of her friends who happens to be a really cool gay guy and it dawned on me I want to be around more people like that.

13. I thought that at first, too. But it does beg a larger question...
...I live in a VERY red state and the chances for interaction and friendships with a gay person or family are fairly slim.

That's the really ugly side of any harassed group needing to gravitate to inclusive neighborhoods, etc.

Even organizations like PFLAG start with the assumption that you have a gay friend, loved one, etc.

21. Yep. When I joined my local PFLAG, I had to explain that I wanted
to be an advocate, and that I was a 'friend.'

From then on, members have been very kind to me.

16. Am I missing something?
Please enlighten me if I am. I'm trying to see all sides of this — but it strikes me as no different from putting out a call for black friends or Jewish friends or friends with physical or mental handicaps.

I'd like to know more people from all walks of life so I can better understand different viewpoints, etc. But I wouldn't solicit them.

22. Well, I honor your view, but I, for one, DID go out and solicit them.
I'm a 47-year-old mom, and a few years back,, I decided I wanted my life to have more meaning. And that meant fighting for the causes I believed in and making new friends, from all backgrounds.

I support the AU (Americans United for Church and State), DU, DFA (Democracy for America), NARAL Pro-Choice America, PFLAG, the NAACP, and PFLAG. Have made many new friends from diverse backgrounds. And I'm happy I did it!

17. I'm not gay but I'll talk to you
I am single and haven't been in a relationship since...well a long time. A while back a gay colleague needed a place to stay so I put him up for a few months at my place. The gossip started and I just let it develop out of sheer badness...snigger.

From talking to him it became clear that gay men have much more interest in culture than most of my bozo mates; I work in the cultural field so that struck me. He was also more attuned to the things that matter in life such as compassion for others. I figure that is because gay men have a shitty time and know what it's like to live in fear. I don't think the latter statement is too strong either.

So, as my cyber voice lowers three octaves, I'm not gay but I find gays interesting, and culturally aware people. No doubt the same is true of gay women although I don't know any.

All the best.
