It's true. I control the weather.
Edited on Sun Oct-09-05 05:46 PM by Robb
I said to myself, "I'll wait one more day to put the tarp on the motorcycle."

Sure enough, it's snowing. :D

On edit: It was worth it. Yesterday:

1. Could you make it just a little bit warmer here?
Just warm enough that I don't have to turn on the heat at night.
I don't think I'm asking for too much.

2. I can create a heat wave!
I'll bring the bike down there, winterize it, and bungie down a tarp to protect it.

Expect much warm weather after that. ;)

3. I think it actually is supposed to heat up again this week.
Proof that you really do control the weather.

4. I'll have a month's worth of today, please
Temps in the 70s, lows in the 50s, sunny, nice normal white puffy clouds...

Please set your weather machine's coordinates forthwith.

7. Great pictures!
I also control the weather. I believed the forecast (said sunny) and went on a hike...got completely soaked (not sunny--rainy). Still had fun, tho. I was the only human on the mountain.

8. Solo bushwacking on a rainy day is a must-have experience
Everyone should try that at least once. Even better if you get lost and scare the shit out of yourself and get back to your car just before dark, wet and exhausted. It's almost like being born again.

11. I love hiking!
It was a pretty rigorous climb, 3200 ft in 2.9 miles. I then did a bit of bushwhacking to the top of a rocky peak (another mile up). It was a beautiful view. My legs were like rubber by the time I got back to the car!

12. Yeeowch! That is a rough one.

I have got to get some new boots. I'm so freaking tired of these three-pound-apiece behemoths that weigh me down.

My favorite spot is a secluded wilderness gorge (a gulf in local parlance) that stretches for miles and is completely uninhabited. 32 miles of hiking trails, many of which you will never encounter another living soul on. Lots of steep elevation, rivers, cliffs, caves, wildlife, fauna, etc. I've bushwacked out there several times with a GPS, and it never fails to wear me to the point of absolute exhaustion.

And there are places just like it all over this area. Secluded gulfs with hidden wonders, many preserved as parks. I stay away from the touristy areas so that I can imagine the earth is all mine.

15. Thanks for the link!
I'll never be hiking those distances, but yes, I'd like to cut weight severely. I'll never forget the time several friends and I packed about 60 lbs apiece down 800 feet of vertical extent over 2 miles, followed by two days of hiking and caving with 30 lb. packs (and they were carrying ropes as well), then packing out about 50 lbs each (there was much beer and bloody mary mix going in that didn't come back out). One guy packed a whole JAR of Skippy peanut butter and a silver knife!

I'll be reading up on Ray's Way. I've had weight preached to me before, but titanium is so damned expensive, and I have more brute strength than money or brains. Still, I know good and well I can be more selective. My big weight limitation is that I pack so much water, never having invested in a good filter. It's nothing for me to carry almost a gallon of Gatorade (plus two Guinness Extra Stout, one for lunch and one for dinner). Not exactly spartan pack discipline.

18. "...and a silver knife."
 Seriously, the Ray Way helped our bunch a lot. It took a few years to get gear light enough, mostly because the lighter stuff is more expensive stuff, but the payoff was in being able to take longer hiking trips without excessive wear and tear on the body.
Husband's trimmed his toothbrush handle. :D

14. That sounds like a wonderful place Hardhead...where do you live?
Edited on Sun Oct-09-05 08:39 PM by Evergreen Emerald
I live in WA state with unlimited hiking possibilites. I usually go to the Olympics, but I have also hiked the Cascades and Mt. Rainier. I have been staying away from Mt. St. Helens, for obvious reasons!

16. Ooh, I hear St. Helens is active again
Nat'l Geo channel had a special on about it today (the original eruption, I mean).

I live in Middle Tennessee, midway between Nashville and Knoxville, and about the same distance from Chattanooga. There are so many wonderful wilderness areas that I'm spoiled: I won't drive more than 90 minutes from home for the great outdoors. There's more of it here than I could ever explore.

So does that road you're on. Izzat limestone? Are there caves? Ah, it doesn't matter. What beautiful country.
