Do The Black Folks In Canada Prefer To Be Called African-Canadians?
Do folks in the UK use the phrase African-Brit? Or is hyphenating one's nationality with one's ethnic heritage strictly an American thing?

Don't laugh! I'm serious... I want to know.

11.  True. I don't think Canadians ever refer to themselves as
North Americans and certainly not as Americans.

4. One thing we need to remember
The X-American thing wasn't inserted to add the X. Back in the bad old days, we called people Mexican and Italian and Chinese, etc. They added American, as in "I'm an American." Given that, X-American doesn't seem so odd.

9. Not in Britain.
A somewhat dopey (i.m.o.) government minister suggested that we should start to refer to our minority communities in this manner - and was widely ridiculed for it.

Black is by far the most common term used in Britain - and does not posses any racist stigma at all. A few older folk still say coloured, mainly out of ignorance in my experience. Occasionally Afro-Carribean is used (most blacks here having arrived from British colonies and ex-colonies in the Carribean).

Perhaps the biggest immigrant communities are from the Indian sub-continent. Where these are referred to, it is most normal that they are just called by the country of ethnic origin (Pakistani, Bangladeshi &c.) - it was a notable point after the London bombings that the term British was added, this was simply to aid clarity (the guys concerned were as British as I am).

12. Eww. And I hate "black" too.
I mean, I'm brown, not black. That has always seemed icky to me.

I use either term, because I don't care that much, but both terms are stupid.

I think African-American is stupid. I call myself black. I'm not from Africa, I'm from Brooklyn. :P

She's Canadian of African descent, btw. And I asked her the same question you're asking here. :)
