A visit to grandfather.
I have been sharing my experiences in Japan long ago with a fellow DUer. The sharing brought this suddenly to mind. In late 1953 I was sent back to the states to attend some advanced training in mine warfare at Yorktown, Va. My flight from the west coast landed at Cleveland Ohio(about two hundred miles from my home.) I left my flight and hitchhiked to my home near Buffalo. I was glad to be home, visit my friends and family. I had a week before I had to be to Yorktown. Dad asked if I wanted to travel up to see grandfather. "No" I say. "We can do that the next time I come up".

Well the next time came a couple of weeks later. We buried Grandfather that week. It was the last time Dad and I and my two older sisters were together.

So if you ever get a chance to visit your Grandfather, do it.

1. Simular thing with my granny
She's 86 years old in a nursing home about twenty miles from here. A couple of weeks ago I was near the home and considering whether to go see granma or go on home.
I thought it's better to go see her alive than see her in her casket later, so I turned the direction of the home and visited her. Yes, it's much better to go see someone who can talk back.

2. August 1976...
stopped by Grandaddy's house and we had a couple of whiskey and cokes (I was 22 and thought it was cool to have drinks with the old man). We sat on the carport and talked. He had a massive stroke the next day and was doa. I'll always be thankful for that brief visit...
