Zyban - Day #1
Dear Diary,

No real difference. Doc told me a couple of weeks before smoking will seem "wierd".

Anti-depressants are cool so I am told. We shall see. Hoping to at least cut the smoking down.

Scotch still tastes gooooood.

2. I quit with Wellbutrin... 6 weeks now, cold turkey.
Edited on Thu Jul-28-05 07:32 PM by Misunderestimator
And five days ago I quit the Wellbutrin. Had a huge anxiety attack the day after quitting and slept barely one hour that night (so just a caution). Then no effect at all. I'm way past the nicotine addiction, and really am completely free of any cravings to smoke.

Good luck to you!

(Also... a really good book that helped me a lot... "Easyway to Quit Smoking" by Allen Carr.)

:hi:

(Edited for general info... Wellbutrin and Zyban are the same thing... Bupropion is the generic drug.)

21. I would love to quit.
Edited on Thu Jul-28-05 07:55 PM by bigwillq
I did for a year and a half about six years ago but then turned 21 and started again when I went to the bar (every night!)

A silly question---Does a doctor just prescribe those type of stop-smoking meds to everyone or what? Do you need to be evaluated first?

22. Funny question... I just moved here, so I had to find a doctor anyway...
on my first visit, I asked if he would prescribe it and he did. I'm sure it depends on the doctor... this one didn't do too much evaluation other than the standard stuff.

24. Thanks.
I am going to the dr. next week so I may ask him for a prescript.

Another ques---Do you have to quick cold turkey when on the meds? or do you drop off the longer you're on the meds???

23. That's excellent, MisU.
I've *really* been wanting to try a Zyban quit, but my insurance won't cover smoking cessation (:wtf:), so I'll have to save up for awhile.

Anyway, I'm always glad to hear it when someone kicks! :hi:

30. If you get the generic... it's only about $50 for a month's supply...
I only used it for 6 weeks...

The brand stuff (Zyban and Wellbutrin) costs upwards of $150.

3. Good luck.
For what it's worth, my dad quit cold turkey. He substituted chewing gum for the cigarettes. He chewed like a madman for a while, but he's been smoke-free for years now.

5. My mother quit by using Wellbutrin
After three weeks, she suddenly realized smoking was "uninteresting" and stopped. Just like that. After 50 years of smoking.

Hope it works that way for you, too.

And yep, it should make somking seem like a worthless activity. I quit using Wellbutrin once. Same stuff. The only caution is that you might not sleep real well with it, but there is a mild sedative they sometimes prescribe with it. Oh, and when yourself off when its time - cold turkey is NOT the way to go.

Good drugs.

13. Actually, I read that if you abruptly stop drinking alcohol
if you are a regular drinker, while on bupropion, it could increase the risk of seizures.

19. I used the generic Bupropion, same stuff... Yes, it worked.
Edited on Thu Jul-28-05 07:55 PM by Misunderestimator
I quit the day I started using it, because I was sick of coughing and reached the limit. And because I'm stubborn.

Every other time I've quit, I've used nicotine gum or the patch, and I've always continued to crave smoking. And then I would start smoking again as if I had never quit. This is the FIRST time that I haven't used any nicotine replacement, so the nicotine is finally out of my system entirely. And voila... seriously... no craving. And NSMA smokes around me too. (I'm working on her.) Aside from occasionally thinking it would be nice to have a cigarette, it really is NOTHING at all not to. And every day it's easier. Swear.

26. I'm using Wellbutrin which I think is the same thing as Zyban
I've been taking Wellbutrin for the past year to treat depression. I've smoked that whole time. In fact I've smoked regularly for 15 years. I finally decided to quit smoking 7 days ago. I've probably tried about a hundred times before this with no success. I've tried the gum before as well. But I have been smoke free for the last 7 days and it has been easier than all the times I had tried before. I still have cravings, but it doesn't feel like I'm going to die if I don't have a smoke like it did before. Hopefully you'll be posting about one week smoke free pretty soon and I'll be posting about 2 weeks.

32. Today is my one year anniversary.
I wouldn't kid you about that - I quit one year ago today.

Here's a website I visited regularly when I first quit: www.quitmeter.com The positive reinforcement was very helpful. According to quitmeter, I've not smoked 7,300 cigarettes in the last year and I've saved $1,825. I have cause for celebration! :woohoo:

Good luck with it, matcom. You can do it!

Congrats on your 7 days, Droopy! :bounce:

I was going to tell you a smoking story but decided against it - those damn 'triggers' are everywhere. During my first month, I altered almost every pattern I had with my habit. I took a different route to work, change my lunch routine, walked, took the stairs, etc.

You're doing great, keep up the good work! :hi:

Think about all the good that can result from this!! No horrid smell to clothing, no left over odors in the house from smoke. Clearer lungs, making hiking and other outdoor stuff seem effortless. Being able to taste food in its best again!

Good luck!

44. worked for me - I wasn't even trying to quit!
I took the wellbutrin as an attempt to treat my ADD, and I just lost the desire for a smoke. weird.

I also had way far-out dreams - so far out, in fact, I quit taking the wellbutrin eventually. Didn't start smoking again, though.

Best of luck to you man - that smoking habit WILL kill you. And isn't there a lot left to experience in life?
