Speaking of hippies...
what is that smell? Is it incense or something?

This is not intended to be offensive, but what is that aroma that wafts from a bunch of "hippies?" It smells as if they put their clothes on a clothesline over a smokey fire.

Oh yeah, Purple monkey dishwasher.

2. I see, said the blind man.
But they must drink tons of it, for it to come seeping out their pores and make that much of a odor.

4. It's patchouli!
My ex-roommate has roll-on patchouli - "for the hippie on the go," as she says.

5. It is Patchouli
A very popular perfume that they use, it is helpful to cover up BO when you don't take a shower...

7. once i was probably what most would call a hippie....
....and I and my friends smelled just fine. In other words, we attended to personal hygiene just like anyone else. We even brushed our teeth and stuff. But some people who didn't care for us assumed we were dirty and smelled bad.
But we smelled just fine. Especially the women.
Now, someone may dab on a little patchouli oil, which is to this day kind of acrid and gross. maybe that's it.

But remember, when you make an assumpetion, you make an ass of you and umption.

9. Not to make too much of an assumption
I went to Reed College, famous for hippies, and there it was a sign of coolness to not bathe regularly. At the time I made fun of the hippies, but to this day I find that they are who I respect more than most subcultures. The women are quite exciting too, something about being 'natural' really makes them more attractive to me.

13. I was a real hippie, 1960s style
not a neo hippie, and I smelled just fine, thank you very much! I think the neo hippies are the ones who don't bathe. :hippie:

8. Patchouli, smoke, and B.O.!
Patchouli, stale cigarette smoke, and body odor.

I'm not a fan of the aroma, but when you love live music and jam bands like I do you get used to it.

Particularly at places like the Bonaroo festival <> and the Austin City Limits festival <>!

10. Yep, I know what you mean.
It wafts over the crowds a some shows. I can detect patchouli coming at me from a mile away.

I'm going to Robert Randolph & Family on Sat. and then Karl Densons Tiny Universe in two weeks. November has turned into a great month for jam bands in St. Louis.

14. RRFB and KDTU
Damn, you're going to get to take in two of my favorites! It was actually thanks to a friend giving me a Greyboy All Stars CD that I got interested in jam bands.

Denson doesn't like playing in Texas too much, though; he's only been here twice in the last two and a half years, once this year for the Austin City Limits festival and once about a year ago for a show at the Gypsy Tea Room in Dallas. After his ACL show this year he played a club show headlining at La Zona Rosa in Austin with Soulive opening (they were also at ACL). I have to say that was one of the five best shows I've ever heard...some of the Soulive crew came out and got down with the Tiny Universe during their set.

Randolph is going to be in Dallas on the 30th of December; he comes around about three times a year or so between Dallas and Austin. He was at ACL and also played a club show headlining with the North Mississippi All Stars opening at La Zona Rosa the night before RRFB's ACL show. That was phenomenal! The Skunk (Jeff Baxter from Steely Dan) got up on stage with the Family Band and tore it up.

Glad to virtually meet another jam band fan here on DU!

I have a good friend who played/plays in a band called Picket Line Coyotes out of Austin. Have you ever heard of those guys?

<ON EDIT> My friend plays with two bands now, Prescott Curleywolf and the Dammnations. His brother plays with the Gourds.

11. I love patchouli...and sandalwood...
Patchouli to me always smells really nostalgic...there is something about it that reminds me of my grandma's attic. She had the "fun" kind of attic, with a stairway going up and a "real" floor and it was such a cool place to play.
I have never minded that smell...nor the people from which it wafts!

12. That's what we humans smell like
Edited on Tue Nov-04-03 04:58 PM by joefree1
You know, what you smell like if you didn't irradiate your body with the following fun stuff in most personal care products:

PROPYLENE GLYCOL: the key ingredient of antifreeze

FORMALDEHYDE widely used in cosmetics as a germicide, preservative, fungicide

IMIDAZOLIDINYL UREA and DIAZOLIDINYL UREA are the most commonly used cosmetic preservatives after the parabens, found in baby shampoos, lotions, creams, oils, etc.

METHYL, PROPYL, BUTYL and ETHYL PARABEN: preservatives that inhibit microbial growth to extend shelf life of products.

ENDOCRINE-DISRUPTING CHEMICALS: dioxins, PCB’s, phenolics, phthalates, petrochemically derived products

TALC (Magnesium silicate) is a natural mineral and a lung irritant. Used mainly in make-up and powders including baby powder.

STEARALKONIUM CHLORIDE is used in hair conditioners and creams. Causes allergic reactions.

SYNTHETIC FRAGRANCES – The synthetic fragrances used in cosmetics (and cleaning products) may contain hundreds of chemicals.

ARTIFICIAL COLORS, labeled “FD and C” followed by a color, are coal-tar derivatives and not plant-based. FD and C Red No. 6 and Green No. 6 are suspected of causing cancer.

*But hey, smelling good is everything right.Just keeping it real.
Joe
