Computer Geeks I need help, please!
I've been playing the game City of Heroes now for quite some time (current high level character is 47) and a few days ago I noticed a problem. When I went to a mission or into another zone my game would freeze and when it unfroze my characters and all the game would be pixelated.

Yesterday I decided to check out the computer by viewing some of my computer movie files (foreign commercials) and they were hazy yellow and washed out. When I viewed them on Paul's computer they were just fine. Paul (who, by the way, is home from the hospital and doing very well!) thought it was going to be the video card so we went out today and got a new card but I continue to have the same problems.

What else could it be? I've not added anything new to the computer and I have updated the video drivers so I have no idea what else could be causing it.

Thoughts? Sugggestions? Something other than committing Hari Kari, please.

1. It could well be caused...
By a side effect from a virus or spyware(my guess). Full scan time.

files were displayed washed out with a heavy yellow cast. I rolled the drivers back to the previous version and the files were fine. I'm not sure about the game problems tho, I don't play CoH.

edit for speling

3. Maybe a conflict with firewall software
Or some other software/hardware? Have you installed anything recently? Also check for viruses and spyware, as mentioned.

5. If it started with your game try re-installing it and see what happens.

7. Those online games will be the death of you!
Specially trying to figure out the computer problems.

Good advice to scan for spyware/virus but that probably didn't cause the problem--those things cause lag more than they do video corruption.

Reinstalling the game may take a while but won't do much either becuase the root is most likely your hardware configuration.

My theory is that Somehow you've updated the driver or corrupted it which caused the pixelation. A new video card won't solve it cause now you have the old driver plus the new driver files.

You need to clean the driver files--it solved my problems when I was playing Ever Quest 2.

I downloaded driver cleaner 3 (link here http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/Driver-Cleaner-Download-6505.html)

Then I downloaded from the manufacturer the latest video drivers and put them in a safe location. (you may also need the sound card drivers).

Finally, I ran driver cleaner 3, cleaned up ALL the drivers (following the directions carefully) and reinstalled the video drivers.

Viola! My game ran without too many hiccups.

8. Could be a disk error
Edited on Fri Jul-08-05 06:04 PM by bananas
Could be a disk error, these would be logged by windows,
run Event Viewer and look in the "system" logs for any
big red X's.
Here's some info on using Event Viewer:
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/j_helmig/wxpevent.htm
(on edit: you don't have to read that whole page,
just the first couple of screen shots to see how to
view the system log; you don't have to configure anything)

If it is a disk error, it might just be a loose cable,
reseat the cables and see if it goes away.

If your disks are ok, it might spyware/virus/trojan,
some anti-virus programs won't detect them all,
try the online scan at http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
