I'm watching Pink Floyd's perfomance for the 20th time
It gets better every single fricking time

I swear Waters & Gilmour played like they've been doing this everyday together for the last 20 years

1. They really did!
I'm curious how much rehearsal time they actually had, or if they were able mostly to just pick up where they left off and come out and play. Certainly, both of them have been playing this music separately for the last 20 years, but that was amazingly tight, right on performance.

3. Lynne
I watched it three or four times this morning my own self.
It's funny how old they look.
I guess with all the drugs they did, they held up well.
They did have to reach a bit to hit the high notes.

David Gilmour ruled.

I loved it, when he turned his head and smiled at the drummer, a little knowing smile that may have said, remember the first time we played this shit?

I'm glad I didn't watch it LIVE on VH1 or MTV.

My head would have exploded when the stupid VJ's interrupted David Gilmour's infamous guitar solo in "Comfortably Numb".

I would have had to strangle someone.

4. I'm not a Pink Floyd historian, but I don't think they did serious drugs
Edited on Thu Jul-07-05 11:43 PM by tridim
At least I always assumed they didn't because of what happened to Syd.

Honestly they look better today than they did back in the old days.

Thanks for that link. Stevie Wonder kicked ass too!

5. You're right
Most of the band were not in Sid's league when it came to drugs, though Rick Wright apparently had a huge coke habit at some point. I suspect Nick Mason did, too. But Waters and Gilmour are both obviously very straight. Both are classic workaholics.

9. Roger Waters looked really good on his "in the flesh Live tour"
which is out on DVD, btw.

If you are an extreme PF purist and can't stand to have Gilmore's guitar bits and vocals done by anyone else, then ignore my next comments. But, the band Waters assembled (including Blues guitarist and vocalist, Doyle Bramhall II, a heavy hitter now for Clapton, Jon Carin and Snowy White)was really quite good. I suspect Bramhall was meant to evoke a young Syd, as he certainly did for me...

Nonetheless, I will treasure this final PF appearance and will buy the DVD when it comes out in the fall.

14. "Doyle Bramhall is what Gilmour would sound like if he lived in Texas"
...That's what I remember reading from one review of the "In The Flesh" DVD. I have the DVD and think it's a great performance, though obviously I would prefer a whole show from the Real Pink Floyd.

Maybe now that's possible.

10. I think Roger is better looking now
and Dave is insanely gorgeous in that second shot

Love this band. I'm so glad Geldof called them. And i'm delighted they are having a big surge in sales. Everyone i've ever introduced to their music is instantly hooked. :)

That's funny. I remember the old days. And back then, David didn't look like my FUCKING GRANDPA.

B-)

15. They weren't wealthy in the old days
Between the Syd years and DSOTM, they were pretty much a cult band. Notice how skinny they were in these photos. Don't assume they ate three squares every day.

They did get to do a fair amount of movie soundtrack work (Zabriskie Point, plus the More and Obscured by Clouds collections), which has been a life-saving gig for many an experimental rock band over time. But they didn't get major royalty checks until DSOTM, and then they ploughed a lot of that money back into building the stage show.

13. Besides Syd Barrett and Rick Wright had a cocaine problem
in the 70's the other member of Pink Floyd weren't into drugs hardly at all. Especially Roger Waters who claims to have tried LSD one time and that was enough for him. He and Nick were mostly beer drinkers from what I read in a book about them and quoted both Roger and Nick and even Dave, who mostly drank and smoked a little pot in the 60's and early 70's.

17. If I may join the fray,
Comparatively, the Floyd were not heavy drug users (apart from Barrett's overuse of LSD). In fact, mason and Waters never even experimented with drugs during the Syd era. Well, Rick Wright did do quite a bit of blow in the 70's, but that's about it. I guess they get the "drug music" stigma since they carved their niche in experimental music early on.

6. Okay
the funniest moment during the live 8 concerts on Saturday which I was watching on my son's computer since the cable stuff was insufferable, was when Mariah Carey was on and I pretty much ignore all pop divas and can't bare her vocal gymnastics. So I came up to check on DU and someone posted a thread that said something to the effect of "why doesn't David Gilmour come on stage and shove his guitar through Mariah Carey's heart?"

I know it was very dark humor but the juxtiposition of this wondrous global magnanimous humanitarian effort versus the image of spurious pop diva getting impaled by a cantancorous rock star's guitar was really too much to take. It was hysterical and kudos to whomever wrote it.

It was shortly after I had been in tears over Sir Bob pulling that formerly starving emaciated Ethiopian toddler who had blossomed into an absolutely stunningly radiant woman on stage and I was moved to tears. Yes I'm a total sucker.

7. LOL
I know EXACTLY how you feel... though I also wanted someone to impale all those inane MTV "personalities." I tried to watch for about 15 minutes before falling back to listen on XM and occasionally stream on my insufferably slow connection via AOL.

Forget the streaming and burn yourself a DVD of the performance

Good God, Roger Waters looks like Richard Gere, and that's a compliment....

I was so pleased to see them together again......

That's saying quite a bit.
