3. The new Stave Malkmus album is great...
he's the guy from Pavement, admittedly a band that I don't quite remember.

5. Here's a list of stuff I like that is relatively new to me:
I'll put the album title where I can remember it

Radiohead - The Bends,OK Computer

Telepopmusik

Turin Brakes-all of it. There are 2 full length records that I have and a new one I don't have, but I'll bet it's good. Their other stuff is ep's etc.

Alex Lloyd-Watching Angels Mend (I think) and Black the Sun I got both of these in one package

Beck - Sea Change, Mutations,

Stone Temple Pilots-Tiny Music

Flaming Lips

Brazzaville-Rouge on Pockmarked Cheeks

You can go to Amazon and listen to bits of all of this

6. The new Dredg album "Catch Without Arms" is a good one
I'd say that Yes is the closest band I could compare them to.

Some others I like from this year:

Beck - Guero
NIN -
Mars Volta - Frances The Mute
Queens Of The Stone Age - Lullabies To Paralyze

7. The new Coldplay album X&Y is amazing.
Jon Stewert was promoting it last night on The Daily Show, too.

9. Ry Cooder's new CD, Chavez Ravine
I've been blathering about this intermittently for several weeks now. I love it. It's Cooder's first recording under his own name since he got involved with the Buena Vista Social Club musicians in Cuba. Here he comes home (to Los Angeles), still dealing with Hispanic music but the variants that they play in the LA barrios.

Chavez Ravine was a neighborhood in Los Angeles which, 50 years ago, the powers that be targeted for demolition. They got an urban planner named Frank Wilkinson to propose an urban renewal plan for the barrio; with the assistance of architect Richard Neutra, he came up with a proposal to replace all the old shanties with modern bungalows. Then the city fathers gave Wilkinson's name to the House Un-American Activities Committee, and with the suspicion that he was a communist, his plan was shelved-- except the bulldozers had already moved in. Ultimately they arranged to build Dodger Stadium on the land.

The music is charming, ranging from remakes of old Latino dance hits to Cooder's own pan-ethnic groovology. In a fairer world "Muy Fifi" would be on heavy rotation on your local radio.

I can't remember when I've enjoyed a new record so much.
