Fish flies...blech!
Yes, it is a sign that area lakes are clean. No they don't sting, bite, harm etc. But man they are ugly. I have to keep my blinds closed in the kitchen while cooking or I lose my appetite. They're mission in life? Hatch, mate, find someplace to stick to, and decompose to a shell that blows around and is truly gross. :puke: They like to land on people, and they're so light you don't even realize it, until you sit back in a chair and mush one. They look like a nuclear experiment gone wrong.

2. I can empathize...
In 1999, I was in Manitoba during the time when the fish flies invaded Lake Winnipeg and surroundings. They were so thick there that the local businesses had to make special accomodations for guests and clients. I have pictures of the area, and all you can see is a dark mass of insects, as the pavement is completely covered.:puke:

4. We went for a ride by the water with my folks last night
Around Anchor Bay, Algonac. They were all over the place. Ick. My dad wanted to eat outside somewhere on the water. We ended up eating inside.

7.  deer flies are even worse---nasty little buggers
I encountered them in Florida once. Deer flies are perfectly good reason why humans were not meant to live in primordial swamps

8. Inever encountered them in Florida... Upstate NY for me.
Every freaking summer... I lived somewhat in the country, surrounded by farms. Those suckers CHASE you when you go running or biking, and the sweatier you get the more of them you get following you. I used to run in a hat with a mesh net over it and long sleeves and pants. If I didn't, I would be covered in angry, itching red welts.

They HURT when they bite.

9. When I was a kid
Edited on Sat Jun-25-05 12:50 PM by Zuni
we went to the Outer Banks in North Carolina for a vacation. I remember a swarm of either really nasty horseflies or deerflies descended onto the beach one day and tore me up and everyone evacuated the beach. It was when I was about 10, but I remember these things were vicious

There are a few species of creature that I would not mind seeing go extinct. Horseflies, deerflies and misquitoes are the top 3.
