Question about Prohibition.
Edited on Sat Jun-25-05 09:29 AM by tjwmason
Nothing terribly serious.

Was there any noticeable split between the two parties over Prohibition? And if so, which one was the more pro- and which the more anti-?

I realise that the neo-con thugs of today are very different from the republicans of former years, and that today's Democrats are also somewhat different (especially in the South) - but I was watching a programme about Prohibition whilst eating breakfast, and just wondered.

1. Minor point

I think it should be capitalized when referring to the period in American history as opposed to just the generic use of the word.

one of he black women judges Bu$h appointed was against birth control for women.. unless the husband agreed, i think it was and she wanted to Prohibit women voting, because the wife might cancel out her husbands vote...

you are going to see a lot more prohibitions.. National security will require it.. every time we invade another country there will be more need to control the underclasses

3. Just a Business, like the war on Drugs, it's a war on the competition
where ever we go the HARD drugs Flow.. just like Panama, Noreaga worked for the wrong cartel, he put some Cali cartel people in jail.. actually the masterminds and major money launderers.. so we went in and set them free and make the president of the bank PRESIDENT of the country.. and cocaine was flowing through there 600% more in 6 months..

that is what our soldiers died for..

and it was so IMPORTANT that we take out that 'DICTATE'.. but what were the charges he was convicted of, what was his sentence and where the hell is he..??

4. Well, the Volstead Act was introduced by a Republican.

And vetoed by Woodrow Wilson, the Democratic President (and passed over his veto). And after 12 years of Republican administrations, Prohibition ended under Roosevelt...I'd say there was more support from Republicans, but at the time the issue cut across party lines and was especially helped by the newfound political power of American women, who were the most vocal "temperance" crusaders (cf. Carrie Nation, Women's Christian Temperance Union, et cetera). And the Fundamentalist movement in the American South and Midwest at the same time probably also contributed heavily to support of Prohibition.

Also, the Populists of the late 19th century (William Jennings Bryan especially) were ardent and vocal supporters of Prohibition...
