I can't live without an Internet connection.
I ran a CAT5 cable from my other apartment to here. I wonder how long it will last through all the door slammings, etc? I wonder if management will make me take it down? I wonder if I'm crazy to risk the theft of my router for three weeks just to have an Internet connection? I wonder if this post makes any sense.

2. I feel your pain. If I don't have my Internet, I go into some serious
withdrawal. I was in the mountains on vacation in Tennessee for three days with no access to the Internet. I was totally lost not being able to go online.

3. Do I have this straight?
You have moved from 1 apartment in a building to another apartment.

Internet access in you new apartment is some weeks away.

You have run a cable from the router in your old apartment to the new apartment.

OK so far?

If so, why not run the cable upstream of the router, placing it in your new apartment, thereby avoiding the potential for theft?

As a computer illiterate, I don't know.

5. I ran a telephone line first, but aparently, it was too long.
Okay, here's the deal: I am in a temporary apartment until my original apartment is renovated, at which time, I move back. The temporary apartment is just across the breezeway on the second floor. No one but me should be coming up here except for the people renovating the old apartment. I decided to leave phone and Internet service alone, since it should be only three weeks or so until I can move back.

First I laid down a regular, very flat telephone cord that didn't suffer if the doors were shut. It didn't work, so I decided to take my cable modem over to the other apartment. I didn't realize it at the time, but I didn't have to even stretch a CAT5 cable across to my computer. I only had to see if the DSL light came on. I'd forgotten about that.

So, I went through the whole rigamarole of connecting my computer...and the damn thing wouldn't turn the fuck on!!!! I was pissed. Finally, I realized I should probably check the jack. Duh. No dial tone. Whoopsie! A few days ago a backhoe tore up the bank and I'll just bet you they severed the phone line. Brilliant! So, I left a message with the manager and today, magically, there was a dial tone...but still no DSL. I called my ISP and they said to see if a shorter or different telephone cable would cause the modem's DSL light to go on. It did, so I ran a 75 ft. CAT5 cable from the modem to my NIC and here we are. I have Internet service for the time being.

The router is in the other apartment. I can keep an eye out and stuff, but if the door is open while the workers are elsewhere... *shrug* :D

I rely on the computer to be my entertainment and communications center. It's my jukebox, my game console, my information broker--everything. It seems castrated without the Internet.

4. Same here. I help put out a source based distro, which means all
the sources are downloaded and compiled as necessary. So, during the periods that I have no connection (which is quite often in this area, even without moving) I not only go through withdrawal symptoms, I also get to feel guilty about it because I'm unable to maintain my sections or work on bugs.
