Seriously, I don't get the appeal of this show. In fact, it horrifies me. My wife loves it, and I can't even be in the same room when it's on.

Smug, hyper dialogue that isn't funny, delivered in the most annoying way possible; cliches re-jigged and re-packaged as hip references: this is what "Gilmour (sp? Who gives a shit?) Girls" delivers. I guess the writers subscribe to the theory that if you deliver terrible dialogue really really fast, it isn't terrible anymore.

Where my homies at? Anyone else want to join me in the "Gilmour Girls" hatefest? Or tell me how much of an asshole I am for daring to criticize their favorite show? Shoot.

1. Lauren Graham was way cuter on NewsRadio
as the efficiency expert. On GG, it looks like she lost all of her curves.

6. "NewsRadio:" Now THERE was a good sitcom.
"NewsRadio" makes "Gilmour Girls" look like an estrogen-soaked Ed Wood debacle.

30. She was hot on NewsRadio -- very curvy...she looked great.
I miss NewsRadio -- I wish they would start running it in syndication again.

and the younger one has a huge forehead - oh, dear god, it's got nothing to do with that - it's the damn dialogue - it is just f***ing annoying

13. I must concur.
The dialogue makes me want to punch things.

See the post downthread: the writers think they're being "screwball;" in reality, they're just puking in dialogue form.

16. yup
that's why I can't - and don't - watch it. Do something else already, RKZ. Tell your loved one it's asking too much; that's what I do in a similar situation. It's really not worth the trouble!

26. sorry RKZ
can't agree with you here. While it's not as good as West Wing dialogue (I have taped and rewound those since it's so fast and smart and hard to catch), Gilmore Girls is one of the few shows on currently that even comes close to the snappy dialogue in those great old 30s and 40s movies like His Girl Friday, etc. I do think they are as screwball as people are capable of these days.

18. Confession: I do watch Gilmore Girls, but mostly to be with
my mom. I don't think she gets it or I get it. I think that Rory is very sexy, but I am getting tired of seeing her punched around by that jerk of a boyfriend, so I am not liking so much.

5. The only "Gilmour" Girls tv show I would watch
Would involve a silent montage of ladies who banged filthy unwashed David Gilmour in the early seventies, shown with the solemnity and deep sadness such an evil tryst would deserve--akin to Nightline's "The Fallen."

10. On a related note....
My mother once told me (when I was about 12) that she found David Gilmour hot.

I began to wonder about my own wide-set eyes, pouty lips, straight, greazy hair, and ability to play glacial bluesy space rock on guitar after she told me this.

If in thirty years or so you look like you should be inhabiting the space under a bridge, threatening wandering goat triumvirs while growing fat off a Volkswagen sponsorship, there will be no doubt.

None of this "momentary" crap.

Still, I think my mom balled a prog-rocker. , mom!

20. Hey that reminds me
When I recommended Talk Talk's later stuff to you, I forgot your abiding hatred of Radiohead. They do sound kind of a lot like the inspiration for the whining boringness of Kid A Yorke & Co., but they also resemble a spaced-out wussified Can as well, and do more interesting things with guitars than Radiohead ever has or will. So no "jpgray guarantee of coolness" goes with the recommendation, but I like 'em anyway.

21. Thanks for the warning. And a confession:
I bought the Futureheads CD today and it's really fucking good. I hate hype (especially when it oozes forth from the Brit music press; remember We Are Going To Eat You? Hipsway? Fleah For Lulu? Menswe@r? Nah, me neither.), but The Futureheads totally live up to the hype FOR ONCE (Is it a blue moon tonight?)

"Decent Days and Nights" is a great tune.

Edited on Tue Jun-14-05 11:33 PM by jpgray
But I've been told it was good. One of my snooty college radio director friends who only deigns to go see bands like Wolf Eyes at this point said it was pretty neat. High praise from this guy for such a "normal"/"mainstream" album.

8. It's a single mom and her daughter, and at that point my interest drops.
I hate shows that try so hard to be clever and hip.
I heard the creator/producer/whatever on NPR, and she was saying she thinks humor is best delivered quick, ala your "His Girl Friday" and the Tracy/Hepburn films where they sometimes tripped over each other's lines.

Her interview got me to watch half of a show. It hurt.

It grated on my nerves--all those WB shows do, actually. Buffy, Dawson, just stop it! Stop it right now!

If it weren't for the skull-crushingly great sex, there'd be lots of therapy fuel to burn through between us.

You know you can have great sex without the threat of therapy fuel ;) Though, it sounds like it might be worth it.

Maybe get one of those parental controls for the TV and block Gilmore Girls :P
