1. Director's Cut is Better
Story on the DVD, in essence: after the movie was in the can, Bogart and Bacall became an item and were all over the press. Nameless studio mogul ordered a re-cut, with more face time for Bogey and Lauren. The theatrical release is the more-face-time version.

The director's cut is closer, although not identical, to the book. The book is an all-time classic of American noir fiction. The movie, with all its faults, is also a classic of American film noir.

2. Leigh Brackett and William Faulkner
That's a far more interesting pairing, as far as I'm concerned.
