Today I brought Jessica to the vet for a check-up 1) because of her diabetes (she had a hypo incident last week and I was concerned) 2) some digestion problems (chronic diarrhea) and a few other concerns.

Jess is 14 now, this month. She's been diabetic for two years now, and at one point in her life, weighed in at 14 lbs. She's my baby. When she was diagnosed with the diabetes her weight dropped by half, to a mere 7 lbs. I was terrified I was going to lose her, but she's done pretty well on insulin and though I know it is likely she won't reach a far old age, I am satisfied she will live for a good deal longer.

The bad news is that she's lost all her little front teeth plus her lower left incisor tooth. I hadn't even noticed! But the vet said she looked good on the rest of them. I don't even know how she lost them--it's a mystery!

The good news is that she has put on a pound and a half! For diabetic cats, putting on weight is nearly a miracle. But it means that she's evidently doing much better being on the insulin, and that her diabetes is, for most of the time, being controlled. (I wish I could say the same of myself!)

Here's a shot of her from 2002:

Here's a shot of her last year:
