I used to like snails, until I had an infestation of slugs in my garden
they were everywhere.

I used this stuff I got from the garden center, and all of the melting slugs made me retch.

I can't bear the thought of putting another snail in my mouth.

Delicacy be damned.

2. My daughter did a paper on the snail
A slug is a snail without the shell. And they are very interesting creatures, believe it or not.

I couldnt eat one either, no way.. Blech

3. I never fixed my slug problem.
I did use a slug bait poison one time, but I didn't like the idea of it being around plants I would eat from.

I tried the beer-dish thing, but the slugs would gather around it but never really fall in and drown. Then I just had a bunch of drunken, rampaging slugs trashing the garden, playing loud music, and reducing the property values.

The best thing I could do was to go out at night and manually pick them off of my plants or the ground and "correct" them (as in The Shining) so that they would never bother me again.

But they are persistent and fertile little bastards.

14. Ultimately, picking them off is the best solution
Beer dishes need to be sunken so that the rim is at ground level. The dish should be a least the depth of a pint size plastic container. That way the slugs slither in but can't slither out. There are effective covered beer traps that sit on the ground. We started using covered traps after the drunken field mouse incident.
;-)
We have noticed that with each additional year of our almost organic gardening the slug problem has diminished and the earthworm population is expanding.

18. escargot is all the rage
and a select group of snails are breed in Europe just for consumption.

I had a party once. I had my best friends over, and I cooked everyone's favorite dish. My buddy, Linda, wanted snails infused with butter and garlic. Everyone loved it.

Mind you, they were all Americans.

5. Did you know that snails are hermaphrodites, and each mating can
result in 100 eggs laid by each snail?

Don't know about slugs, but I bet it's a similar number.

Try to avoid the toxic bait and use "Sluggo", instead. It's iron phosphate, not toxic to pets and kids.

21. I worked in a restaurant once where I had to prepare
the escargot for cooking...garlic butter, snail, more garlic butter. Having a few of those things split in my hand did it for me. Totally green slime and disgusting.

23. If you put plastic around the garden...
Edited on Sun Jun-05-05 11:41 AM by rasputin1952
then put salt on the plastic...(making sure all slugs/snails/eggs are out of the garden first), the problem is solved. The plastic wrap prtoects the area around the garden from the effects of the salt, and slugs/snails will definately stay away...:)

Since slugs are true hermaphrodites...there is serious trouble if there are ANY in your garden...x(

Edited on Sun Jun-05-05 01:42 PM by CatWoman
they are coming up nicely, however, I see evidence of chewing on the leaves.

I dusted them with Sevin dust yesterday, and now the rain is washing it off.

Have to reapply after the rain stops.
