The shape of the container, whether or not evaporation occurs, how the hot water changes the refrigeration environment, whether or not super cooled water is involved, all of these are speculation.

In other instances the cooler water freezes first. Sort of like some "cold fusion" experiments. One group can produce an effect and some other group produces a different effect.
