1. Country music.
The city was pretty irate when it came in the 1920s or so since it was known as more of a cultural center but I guess it's here to stay.

We actually took a trip out there to see it and enjoyed ourselves. I was pleasantly surprised by Cleveland. Unlike Pittsburgh, it was easy to find your way around. :)

I love my city, though. Go Steelers! (The Pirates stink, though).

since it's far away enough to forget. I think that Disney holds less sway over Orlando every day, partially because of the decline in tourism since nahn-leven.

thanks for the compliments on downtown, its not often you hear that. downtown could use more, but I think its off to a decent start under Buddy Dyer.

there are three cultures here - native american, hispanic (spaniards) and us white folk. obviously, the native people were here first, the spaniards conquered them, then the white people stumbled upon it by accident in the late 1800s. the hispanics here hate everyone. they tell people (right out loud) that they were here first. hello-o-o-o-o? they run the town, and you're shit out of luck if you want anything done and you're not a martinez or a gallegos. it's wearing on me after 20 years....

55. Minneapolis-St. Paul:
"Urban renewal" that replaces slummy traditional shopping areas with cheesy, shabby-looking big box stores with vast wind-swept and potholed parking lots.

Folks, taking a row of pawn shops, greasy spoon diners, Pentecostal storefront churches, liquor stores, and and check cashing places housed in 1890s brick buildings flush to the sidewalk, and replacing it with a K-Mart with a sagging roof and a parking lot that needs resurfacing is NOT an improvement. Especially not when you put an equally tacky-looking Office Max and a Payless Shoe Source (also with a poorly paved parking lot) across the street from it.

I wish those assholes would pack up and go. Baton Rouge is fine most days, but on others it smells like something died.

83. Let's see... this might be difficult...
-At least top 5 in drug use (it was number 1 for heroin use in the late 90s, I'm not sure if that still applies)

-Pretty near number one in sexually transmitted deseases

-Up there in the murder rate

-Really bad traffic

there are others but I don't want to trash Ole B-More too badly all in one post.

Thanks for protecting and serving me, asshole. Tailgating me for half a mile until i leave town really helps to keep the crime rate down. Morons.

86. Sprawl
Edited on Mon May-30-05 10:44 AM by LizW
We're the poster child for suburban sprawl in the state of Alabama. Few sidewalks, no crosswalks, no public transportation. It's impossible to get ANYWHERE without fighting crushing traffic. I live within 2 1/2 miles of practically everything I would ever need except the library, but I can't get anywhere by biking or walking because the streets are clogged, narrow and dangerous.

Edited for typo.

91. a recent rise in gang related violence
My dad works in one of the worst areas in Trenton and he can attest that the bloods are making their presence known...and some of their shit is creeping out into the township that I live, and that is NOT a good thing.

Other than that I can't stand the traffic and the Walmarts that are being built everywhere!

I know, it's corny, but if this town would just start getting warm around March like it does in the rest of the civilized world, by god, it's be the best city in the world.

99. The Padres.
During the Reagan/Bush recession all of the MLB players went on strike and had the nerve to tell everyone that 100k minimum salaries were not enough for working a few short months out of the year with all the perks. If that wasn't bad enough they decided that the stadium they were playing in wasn't good enough, so they stiffed the taxpayers on a new stadium. They need to go.

101. The Smooth Road Commission.
You won't find it on any of the city listings, but I know we have one. There is a secret crew that rides around the city of Boston looking for smooth roads.

When they find one, they have some utility company come out & dig some holes in it. They then do a really shitty patch job & wallah! Instant crappy road. After a few freeze / thaw cycles, the potholes look like they have always been there.
