Blockbuster review from BuyBlue website(for those of us cancelling Netflix
http://www.buyblue.org/detail.php?corpId=76

I'm thinking I could do Blockbuster. It seems they are a 40% ratings because their association with Viacom. But as for Blockbuster executives, the only donation was from the CEO and that was to a democratic candidate. Here's the blurb from http://www.buyblue.org

Summary Company Info In the News Financials Alternatives Take Action
Blockbuster Inc.

BuyBlue.org's Rating:
(What do the ratings mean?)
Rating: Light Red - 40 %

BuyBlue.org's Position:
Blockbuster currently has a 40% BuyBlue rating due to political contributions for the 2003-2004 election cycle. Blockbuster's executives were relatively inactive politically with the exception of one Democratic donation from their CEO. Blockbuster was closely held by Viacom until late 2004 and therefore is associated with the Viacom PAC for the 2003-2004 election cycle. Since they are now a separate entity, it'll be interesting to watch what they do in 2006.

In a nutshell, what made blockbuster red no longer exists I checked out John ANtico (the CEO) at Open Secrets and he gave $1000 to Kay Bailey Hutchenson and Patrick Leahy, so I guess they cancel each other out.

1. LS, can I ask why you're cancelling?
Maybe I misunderstood, but I thought Netflix was buying out WalMart's online subscribers. How is that bad?

3. Why are people cancelling NetFlix?
They bought out Wal-Mart's online DVD rentals. NetFlix still exists, they weren't bought by Wal-Mart.

8. I signed up for this GreenCine online site
Independant online movie distributer with what looks to be a more eclectic selection of movies. Plus it's a progressive company. Rates aren't as good (only 2 DVD for $15 instead of 3) but I just signed up to support them over Netflix.

People don't get it - sure, it's Netflix taking over Wal-Mart but you better believe Wal-Mart is going to have some say in how NF runs their business (and possibly in profits). I don't trust that merger and I would prefer to take my business elsewhere.

10. Does Blockbuster still edit their movies for content?
Just another thought I was reminded of. Blockbuster edits out a lot of sex and violence.

Greencine sounds interesting.

11. I'm going to Greencine anyhow...
..how can blockbuster edit DVDs?

But I'm switching to GreenCine.

THe only thing I have local for video stores are all Latino rental places which I can appreciate with all the Hispanics in the area but I don't speak Spanish so it doesn't work for me

14. Please tell me that's not true
that can't possibly be true. There is no way a chain would edit movies.

Is there???

:scared:

16. I did some quick research, and found that it's partly true.
Blockbuster claims you can get either the unedited OR the edited version in the store. I dunno about online.

18. Well, at least you supposedly have a choice
I'm not a big fan of censorship, but they do it on TV, so I guess as long as it's clearly labeled and everyone has the choice, it's not the end of the world.

I'd hate them to be doing it because they felt it was the right thing to do , if you know what I mean.

17. Is the service good?
I really have loved Netflix for a couple years now, but I'd switch to an even more progressive company, particularly one that has tons of offbeat movies.

How quick is the turn around? I'm not into VOD, so I'd be a mail customer. I don't like watching movies on my computer.

19. Certainly as good as Netflix,
and possibly better. Also they have cardboard wrappers for the discs so you don't get as many broken ones.

21. Using that logic, you can no longer read newspapers that carry
Wal-Mart circulars and can no longer watch television stations that carry Wal-Mart advertisements.

Sorry, but boycotting Netflix because they're buying out Wal-Mart's online rental business is ridiculous.

4. I've used both
and even though I shudder at the corporate behemoth, Netflix really sucks. There have been some things they couldn't avoid (people watching my movies and returning them - I never got them), but the customer service department barely exists. It's like talking to a brick wall.

9. I'll stick with Netflix.
The CEO and COO are both contributors to Dean, Kerry, Boxer, et al. As long as they're in control, Netflix keeps my business.

15. I really don't give a damn who contributes to what to be honest
I figure every corporation I use is dirty to some degree. NetFlix rocks. So, I'll stick with them.

I really can't be this politcal 24/7. My head would explode. I just want the latest Denzel movie quickly.
