Notice they all redeemed themselves before takeoff: Michael forgiving Walt for burning the original raft, Walt giving Shannon the dog, Jin apologizing to Sun, and Sawyer telling Jack how his father was proud of him. If you believe the purgatory theory, they all served their penance.
