Man Parachutes Off Eiffel Tower - Parachute Gets Stuck - Man Dead
<snip>

PARIS -- A Norwegian man who leaped off the Eiffel Tower in a publicity stunt was killed after his parachute got stuck on an upper deck of the monument and came off, officials said Tuesday.

The man was Norwegian, said Anne Lene Sandsten, a spokeswoman for Norway's Foreign Ministry.

Preliminary investigations indicate the man planned to film his jump as part of a publicity stunt for a Norwegian clothing brand, police said. The man, 31, entered the tower with a hidden parachute and a helmet that had a small video camera attached to it, an official at Paris' police headquarters said on condition of anonymity.

When the man reached the tower's second deck 380 feet up Monday evening, he jumped. Investigators believe his parachute got caught on the tower's structure and detached.

The man continued his fall, crashing onto the 182-foot-high first deck of the Paris landmark, according to police and an official for SNTE, the company that manages the tower.

Hundreds of people have died at the tower, which is 1,063 feet tall with its flagpole, since it opened as a star attraction of the 1889 World's Fair.

Most of the deaths were suicides. The first reportedly was that of a printer's mechanic, who hanged himself from the tower's north pillar in 1891, bequeathing his clothes to builder Gustave Eiffel in his will.

The tower also has long attracted daredevils. Franz Reichel, a mustachioed Austrian tailor, was killed leaping from the first deck in 1912 to test a tent-like parachute coat he had invented. He is said to have died of fright before hitting the ground.

1. Bequeathed his clothes?
What, did he have a closet full of Armanis or something? Who'd want the mechanic's clothes?

I find that statement more bizarre than the entire rest of the story.

2. A Darwin nominee?
Someimes I just don't understand people like this, wanting to play daredevil on the big monuments. Ah the Eiffel Tower, watered with the blood of the terminally depressed and the terminally stupid.

3. Australian rappelling off the Eiffel Tower would be fun
You'd have to be crazier than a shithouse rat to parachute from it, 'cause it's not tall enough to give you time to track away from it.

6. Why do you suppose shithouse rats are so crazy?
Is it the fumes or do you just have to be crazy to live in a shithouse?

These are the things that keep me awake at night.... :silly:

8. Another hobby I won't take up
skydiving off buildings.

I won't take up doing over-the-top publicity stunts either.
