I work for a small company and there's a new job opening up...but...
The top brass has made it known that the application process for the new job will be a open search outside of the company. Any current employee interested in the job will have to apply and compete with outside people.

The issue is, there are probably a dozen or so employees and the new position would pretty much be a promotion for me under normal circumstances. And to be honest, I'm really the only one who is remotely qualified for the new position in the entire company.

Should I be worried about my job security as it now stands and do you think I have a right to be angry that they would not just promote me, but instead conduct a candidate search?

1. No, do your best and apply. They may have a wider skill set in mind, etc.

Don't take it personally - rise to the challenge.

Good luck!
