A friend sent me this link today. It's frightening to learn this information, but you might wish to know it. I had more than twenty people listed in my zip code; my daughter had more than that.

I know that this is not a pleasant subject. It was brought to my attention at work. It seems that we have a registered sex offender two blocks from where I work. Sometimes during break we tend to take walks. This was brought to our attention to be aware and for us not to walk by ourselves. The website listed below can be used for many states. Simply put your zipcode in, if there are offenders in your area, a listing will come up, with names and zip codes. Simply press on the name and information about each offender will come up.

I tried a wealthy residential zip code and a poor residential zip code.

There were zero offenders in the wealthy zip and 15 in the poor one. I know how it goes from working with Child Protective Services.

I hate these public databases. They give people a false sense of protection. Sure, the black 18 year old who had consentual sex with his 16 year old girlfriend and then was charged with "statutory rape" might be listed, but what about the wealthy white accountant next door who's molesting his nephew?

In my home town, ALL of the listed offenders are black. I know of several cases of molestation by white perpetrators that are not listed.

I just tried the zip code for Medina, WA (where Bill Gates lives) and got zero. I'll bet the Mayor of Spokane lives in a wealthy zip code and I'll bet you that there isn't one offender listed there either.

I know MANY women who have wealthy white fathers who were molested. It's just like the War on Drugs--it's a war on poor people.

But, please don't think I approve of child molesters. I seriously don't, but I don't approve of injustice either.

One of the offenders in my area is only 16 years old. And he's a minority.

I also checked the zip code of my school. All are minorities. And the neighborhood is NOT all minority.

Particularly after reading this thread, as I live in a fairly economically depressed corner of Brooklyn. A lot of projects, lot of minorities, etc., so I thought my zip code might be highly skewed.

I was expecting to see an extensive list. However, there is apparently only one person in that neighborhood listed on their database.

I then checked my small (20K) hometown in rural Illinois -- about 20 to 30 names popped up.

there have been cases in which an individual caught taking a leak in public has been charged with indecent exposure and from then on is categorized as a sexual offender. Not all the data bases give the specifics of the offense.

a friend and i were browsing the wisconsin sex offender registry website, looking around in our town. my friend was scrolling through names, stopped for a second and clicked on one and stopped dead.

it was the father of his girlfriend's best friend! he had just eaten dinner there the week before! i don't remember exactly what his offense was but it definitely involved a minor

Most street addresses I wasn't familiar with, but a cluster of them were all within a few houses of each other (garden apartments?), and one is just a few houses away from my own home.

I checked my zip code the other day and found that a sex offender lives in my trailer park. A few months ago, we got a postacard telling us that a high risk sex offender lives within walking distance.

Which is a small dairy farm community.

However, in my parents area about 40 came up. Hardly surprising since they live in SE Virginia, not too far from Virginia Beach.

So, I checked my old neighborhood in New Orleans, 70116, and got too many to bother counting. This is a heavily gay neighborhood, so draw your own conclusions. HOWEVER - what was surprising is all the women!!!

I typed in the zip code where I grew up, because there were a couple of creepy men in the neighborhood that always made me nervous as a kid.

Well, they've probably long since passed away, but imagine my total shock when I found the name of an old boyfriend! I checked our state registry to be sure, because they have pictures of the offenders, and sure enough, there he was...the same arrogant, egotistical bastard that broke my heart years ago.
