A Kelso Game Hen will kick your ass if you try to take her babies.
That's what I have to do this morning. Kelsos are badass chickens. They are bred to be badass chickens. I don't fight mine, I just raise them because I enjoy it.

My hen has a brood of about a dozen chicks under her right now. The only reason I am taking the chicks is because she has been sitting for three weeks...maybe a little longer, and she has refused to eat. I'm afraid she's going to sit herself to death, if I don't take the babies.

Yesterday, my dad and crazy aunt talked me into going into the pen. I picked the hen up, and about a dozen babies fell out from under her wings. I put her by her feed, but she jumped right back up in the nest to the babies...she was so light that she was nothing but feathers and bones.

She pecked the hell out of me yesterday, and all I did was pick her up. I'm afraid she's going to rip me to pieces when I try to remove the babies in a bit.

Wish me luck. :scared:

1. Fireplace gloves and a laundry basket
I find these help in all sorts of similar situations. ;-)

Good luck!

They can be real buggers. I don't think I will be adding any of them when I decide what poultry to keep on my farm. Can you drop a pillowcase over her?

Let us know how it goes. We can compare, I think I may be nursing a black eye by later today because my 3 year old mare just kicked my ass during her vaccinations and bent the hell out of my glasses. Grrrrrr, sometimes

Still, it is the life is it not?
