6. I remember a heartfelt plea from a freelancer in the Village Voice
from the mid-1980s - a plea to Mick to just quit, please, as the thing had become such a bad joke.

Here we are 20 years on.

8. Did you feel that way about Johnny Cash? Chuck Berry? James Brown?
I mean, everybody gets old. Why pick on the Stones?

10. uh, I would have answered yes to that question on the 'Steel Wheels' tour
nearly 20 years ago.

A little quiet dignity and grace would be a good thing now.

11. The last time I saw them
in 1997, it took Keith 5 tries to get the Brown Sugar opening right. I love them but it's time to pack it up.

12. I say no..
They are just doing what they do. People don't have to listen to them, buy their music or go to concerts.
Can I ask how they are making your life any worse? We will all get old dude, you are getting there too. :)
Someday matcom might be asked to go away because he is too old.

26. I'm with you.
I said the same thing last year about this time when a woman on another bulletin board was bitching about Jimmy Buffet "running around in his Bermuda shorts at his age making a fool of himself."

This is what they DO. If people don't like it, they don't have to go see them. I've never been a huge Rolling Stones fan, and I've never had a desire to go to one of their shows or buy one of their albums. But their presence certainly doesn't bother me.

14. No.
A few years back, I might have agreed with you. Then my son asked to hear them live for his 18th birthday; we took him to see the "Bridges to Babylon" tour in 1997. I grew up listening to the Stones; I gained respect for them that night. They seem to have had no trouble keeping up with the passage of time; not physically or musically.

As long as people still want to show up and hear them, still want to buy their new stuff, and they are still able to do the job, they can keep playing.

16. No, they gather no moss.
As long as audiences want to see them, and they want to play, they should tour on and on and on.

I saw the Madison Sqaure Garden show on HBO a year or two ago, and thought they a great job.

I saw them live in about 1980 and thought they were a great live act.

17. No-one asks John Lee Hooker or Ben E. King to go away
Everybody respects them for the greats they are.
Why are the Stones treated differently?

18. So--what are their stage shows like nowadays?
Old blues & country guys can keep going forever. But they project wisdom & soul--& wear nice suits (especially the bluesmen). Does Mick still prance around singing "don't you think I'm sexy?"

As long as people pay to see them, I can see why the keep going. Personally, I liked them more before they drowned Brian.

19. Hell Yes!
THey keep putting out crap which ruins the musical genius of their stuff from the 60s & 70s. The rate they're going the legend will almost be dead in about 3 years

20. Have you ever heard of a rock star retiring?
Oh yeah that's right Bill Berry of REM did. Aside from that no one comes to mind.

See commanderbunnypants's thread about $403 tickets to see the Stones.

they should keep going as long as they want to and as long as people will pay to see them.

I am offended by your blatant agism.

I mean, what's a few wrinkles or a couple of spandex-enhanced bulges between consenting adults?

23. It was time for them to go away after "Tattoo You"
I honestly can't think of more than 3 or 4 songs that wern't crap since then; the Mick Taylor-era Stones were their peak, anyway IMO..
