Poll question: Are lower back tattoos on women trashy?
Or just trendy? Or both?

Anyone have any knowledge on how and/or where it started?

I'm guessing it's something that started with some female pop-rock star then became the "HOT" fashion statement.

1. I certainly think they are trendy, but
"trashy" is in the eye of the beholder. To each her own.

123. A friend of mine got a lower back tattoo a few years back
around the beginning of this trend.

She was awfully excited about it and wanted us (a few male friends) to see the "cool symbol" she had gotten tattooed there.

Imagine our surprise when we all realized that she had gotten the Webelos Cub Scout symbol tattooed on her lower back. Luckily, most of us were able to fight back our giggles.

Imagine staring at that while...

Lower back would be a good place to put it. Easy to hide if you need to. It's less trashy than other places I could think of to put one.

5. These are really getting big now...
But I am aware of a dedicated cult of alternachicks that always found this really hot. My best friend when I was just turning 18 got this great tat on her lower back about 11 years ago, and it has worn well with time.
I think it's lovely - I rather hate to see the things I like get turned into a trend, however. :)

I have an impulsive 16 year who would pierce or tattoo anything that I would let her. She has a tattoo, that I paid for that is on her lower shoulder. I do understand girls and don't think they are ignorant. I think they need guidance.. That is what I implied. I happen to be an expert at this moment in my life on girls!! If you want one that is you personal choice. if she wants then they are my choice until she is out of my house. Thanks

and personally I think the lower back tattoo is just that - a fad. My Jordache jeans I had in high school were a fad too and when they went out of style I donated them to good will.

Unfortunately you can't donate your ass to goodwill because you followed a fad and put a tattoo on your lower backside like every other girl did!

a little "trashy" is good sometimes, on some women. Quite a few out here have one, although usually not as btrusive as the one pictured (a butterfly, say, would be more like it).

32. A little trashy is fun.
I've been a prim and proper lady pretty much all my life, and I got my first tattoo for my 50th birthday. I got it on my ankle, however, since that is a body part whose shape is pretty much unchanging except for the occasional edema due to dietary indiscretion.

Both my daughters have tattoos that are quite beautiful, and the low back is a nice unobtrusive place for one. Hopefully they continue to take after my husband's side of the family where the women stay lithe and lovely into their 80s.

Permanent body art is a big committment, so it's entirely personal. I always figure the people who chose to do it know what they are doing so what business is it of mine?

Don't like them? Fine. Don't get one. But stop taking dumps on me and others who chose to decorate their body with art. And yes, there are morons who may have made choices that you yourself do not like, but it's THEIR BODY.

"But stop taking dumps on me and others who chose to decorate their body with art".

I totally agree, any person should be able to decorate (or desecrate), their own body in any way they choose... I have no problem with that.

What I'm getting at is people who get cheesy/stupid tattoos because it's the "hip" or "in crowd" thing to do then regret it later.

I think the people who are really into the total body ink thing are a different breed, but at least they take the body modification stuff seriously (although I highly suspect that even in that circle there's always the incentive to out do each other).

23. In my experience...
some people are trashy no matter what they're wearing or where they're tatto'd. And some people are elegant, no matter what they're wearing or where they're tatto'd.

It's a 'total package' thing and not so much a function of the body art.

a whore for having a tattoo above my ass.

to answer your question, No, guys don't ask me about my grandmother when they are rump-riding me, seeing as I only fuck my husband. And no, he doesn't have a problem with it.

I don't see how a person can think of another persons back as their view only. Only one reason to get inked there? Then why don't women get naked women tattooed on their backs so guys can look at tits and ass at the same time? give me a fucking break.

I don't give a shit if you want ink on your body, just keep your judgement to yourself. Hate mine or love, I really don't care, it's the name calling that pisses the shit out of me.

124. Look, Missy....
"Just don't call me a whore for having a tattoo above my ass."

Would you care to show me in EITHER of my posts where I called you a "Whore"?

In my first post, I just said how I thought they were over-done and had become a cliche.

THEN you lit into me like I had attacked you personally.
I responded in kind. Maybe you shouldn't have gotten it in the FIRST place if you're so damn "thin-skinned" about what strangers think about it.

So god-damn sorry that I dispapointed you because you seem to expect everyone in the fucking world to just LOVE your "artwork".

Don't even ask me what I think about those stupid "tribal" armbands and barb-wire-around-the-neck tats. You wouldn't like my answer.

142. I would consider encouraging me to get a tattoo that pointed to my
privates and said '19th hole' as personal.

again, read carefully here:

I don't care if you like my or anyone else's tattoo, just don't judge my characterfor it. I may be sensitive towards those in this thread (including you) who made deplorable and disgusting judgemental comments about the fucking PLACEMENT of my tattoo, but come on! WTF did you expect to get back after typing that?

let me make something clear, no you didn't use the word whore, but the 19th hole comment certainly implied it, and coupled with the other comments: easy and trashy mostly; I got pissed. Really pissed.

Call me easy because I will have sex with my husband anytime and anywhere, call me trashy because I curse or because my upbringing was decidedly closer to 'white trash' instead of debutante balls and limo drivers; but because I decided to have some ink put above my ass? what the fuck ever.

162. I still you're sexy fleabert, despite what I said about tattoos
It just seems that every woman out there has one of these lower back tattoos.

I'm sure they mean different things to different woman, but for a guy who is just looking (and yes, I tend to look in that general area), they end up all looking the same (I'm speaking of the tattoos here).

165. thanks. I can see and understand what you are saying.
you are saying they are trendy right now, of course they are! some people are saying that the mere placement of my tattoo (or any womans) indicates inherent trashiness, THAT'S what I am ticked off about. Plus the idea that I (or any woman) should have considered what a guy would be thinking while having sex with me from behind in my placement decision, WTF! I know you are not like that.

if you don't like tats, that's totally cool with me, no judgement here. But it does make me kinda want to get you drunk and convince you to get one...a small discreet one... preferrably something silly. :-) J/K.

169. You know what's funny?
I almost got a tattoo ten years ago when I was living in Spain. It was right after college and I ended up living in Europe for two years and it was the most liberating time of my life.
I was living in this resort town in the south of Spain, working in this Irish pub that catered to English and Irish tourists, and I was having the time of my life.
And there was this tattoo parlor in the town and my friends from the pub were getting tattoos and I wanted to get something cool on my upper right arm.
I didn't want a Celtic band (for I'm not Irish descent even though I ended up living in Dublin for 18 months), but something that reflected myself as a writer.
I was thinking of getting a writer's quill (like the image below)crossed with a sword with some kind of cool design around it. I was discussing it with the artist and he said he could come up with something along those lines.
Anyway, I ended up not getting it because it was above my budget at the time. I was a traveling man and could not afford spending almost a hundred dollars for a tattoo.

sounds like an amazing time, I loved Spain, I was only there for four days, but would go back in a heartbeat. We are continually ready to move overseas! (and have been since before the little shit became president!)

I wonder how you feel about the tattoo now? Maybe you would regret it, maybe you'd have a dozen by now...they are addictive! :-)

by her pantsline. She must have not given it enough healing time and her pants literally rubbed a line right through the middle of it. That's gotta suck after paying big bucks and going through the pain.

I have one tattoo on my right ankle and I love it (but it hurt like hell). The Prophet has several tattoos and I think they are incredibly sexy! It's all relative. :)

82. My grandmother loved dragonflies, self published a book of poetry,
named her company 'Dragonfly Publishing', she collected them, and saw them as an ispiration in her poetry and dreamwork. She died unexpectedly at the age of 67 in 2003. She was my best friend first and my grandmother second, my liberal role model in a family stinking full of Republicans. We were singled out often for our views on politics, and found great solace in being able to comfort each other when the shit hit the fan, politically and otherwise. I miss her terribly.

I chose the lower back because it is easily covered for my job, but can be visible w/out removing clothing. I also have plans for a tat on my neck to commemorate the birth of a child (when I have one), that will line up nicely with the dragonfly. I considered the upper back, but it would have had to be huge to get the dimensions right with my shoulder blades. (and I just wasn't interested in that large of a tat at this time. Plus, I have a big scar there from a mole removal that would have been difficult to work around)

I worked with an artist to come up with a dragonfly that would be unique and not look like every other dragon/butterfly tat out there. I think we succeeded.

sorry for the novel, you asked some questions that have big answers!

Just why the trendy interest in tacky tattoos.

Years ago it was the "MOM" and Vargas girl type tattoos.

Then for sometime it was the "biker/prison" type tat's (spider web on the elbow was always classy).

No problem with anyone getting one. But, if you're going to do it, do it because it means something to you and not because there's some special need to feel like being a rebel or be cool and fashionable because all your friends are doing it.

I'm 35, and I know a lot more people in my age group/social circle who have a tattoo or a few than ones who don't. My (female) boss has three. They've been pretty broadly fashionable since the late 80s/early 90s (got my first one in '91. No regrets yet, still waiting...), and they can't really go "out" because they're permanent.

They're no more remarkable to me now than dyed hair or pierced ears, really. What makes all the difference is the quality of the work and the design itself and the story it has for the person who has it.

Trashy is a matter of personal opinion while trendy is a fact. If lots of people are doing it, it's a trend. Doesn't mean it can't be trashy too.

108. I'm sorry. It's not that I think you're ignorant, I just don't like them
and I think they look goofy. Whether it's an anchor on an old sailor's arm...or some cutesie, or not, depiction on a young woman's hind end. Apologies all around, but I ain't changing my opinion. :hi: I'll still talk to you if you have one. ;) My brother looks like an ass, in my opinion, with the big sunburst thingy on his shoulder. I love him to pieces all the same.

109. I can totally respect that. Your perspective is completely different from
those that are saying women, and only women, are of a particular persuasion if they have a tattoo on their lower back. Not just have a tat, that's okay, but in that spot- trash. Easy has been said as well.

You just don't like them, cool with me, I won't force you to get one! :-) Why people can't see the difference in these two reactions is beyond me! (not you, you I am very fond of) :-)

I have seen a couple that are huge, like hip-to-hip and about 6-8 inches tall and that gets to be too much. But, a small tat there can be very attractive.

Geesh, there's no bias on that poll. :eyes:

I have a tattoo on my lower back. It's not one of those McDonald's tribal designs but something my tattoo artist designed for me. I originally wanted the tattoo (of a phoenix) between my shoulder blades but he suggested the lower back. The phoenix moves along my body with the the contours of my muscles and I love it. I can show it when I want and cover it when I want.

But alas your poll has no place for me.

but that's too much like asshat, and that's not very nice.

and.. maybe trashy is the wrong word, too subjective. One man's trashy is another man's elegant.

I don't have a tattoo, or a piercing, because I've just never wanted one. But if you do... more power to you.

It's kind of like owning a car. What I drive is for me to have and enjoy. Not for you to look at and judge. If you like my car, hey great, thanks for the compliment. You don't like my Oldsmobile? Don't buy one. But don't question my personality, responsibility, sexual promiscuity, etc, because you don't like it.

...is "look at my ass." That may not be the message you intended to send, but it's the message that most I and most men are receiving (it's liek those shorts with words on the butt).

I, for one, like the ass tatoos. I don't see anything wrong with them, but I don't see them as "lower back" tatoos either. People have been combining sex and art for millenia, so body art (tatoos) are inherently sexy. Unless they're poorly done, but that's a whole other rant...

I hope you would notice the artistry of my tat, and not what sits about 8 inches below it, but I can't do anything about it if you don't. As long as you don't accuse me of being a slut or of being 'trashy' because of its placement, I am cool.

160. really? do you know anything about the tattoo and piercing industry?
Edited on Wed May-11-05 01:41 AM by fleabert
I know several in the business, and they have tons of training on bloodborne pathogens and use exceptional means to maintain a clean facility and well trained staff. I would never get work done at a place that didn't use an autoclave for instruments; needles are never used twice.

Most states have their own regulations for this industry, but I know the health department is usually involved, and I guarantee you that if a facility had more than two complaints, you'd hear about it. (same as a restaurant with foodborne illnesses, takes two to get an investigation in most states)

I am not unclean because I have a tattoo, nor do I have poor judgement, I educated myself and made a decision based on facts.

153. Depends on the art inherent in the tat. A faded sunrise on a buttcrack...
can be pretty tacky, if not kinda boring.

But if the art of the lower-back tattoo has been well thought through, and has personal significance to the individual (refer to fleabert here, for example), and it has been perfectly realized by an artist, then the tattoo can be quite beautiful -- a piece of art akin to permanent jewelry.

175. I generally don't understand the point of them
I do understand people who get them because they have a major personal reason for getting them, but I haven't seen that this is true for most. It seems like most people just get them because they are considered trendy, and it's a trend that I don't really understand. No surprise, as I really don't understand most trends. I just don't generally think they look good; and this applies not just to lower back tattoos on women, but to tattoos in general.

I know I'm weird, but I'm just more about keeping things real when it comes to your own body. So, tattoos, piercings, hair coloring, etc. I don't really see the need for. But I know they work for some people and it's none of my business if they want to do whatever. They're just not my thing.
