2. I always lock the doors. I am a female
living in the burbs, but I am skittish, so when I am in my office working, I make sure the doors are locked. When the kids get home, I usually leave the office and by then, they are running in and out, so it is pretty futile to lock the doors.

if i am asleep or if i am going to be doing something where i wouldn't be able to hear someone enter (like playing music/taking shower) i will lock the door, otherwise i leave it open.

i am a male.

edit: maybe you need a "sometimes" lock my door option?

8. Only sometimes when i am awake
Most of the times when i go to bed, although there have been times i left the front door unlocked all night. I live in the heart of Denver so that's not a good idea, but all's well that ends well i guess.

9. I am a female, I always lock my door unless my husband is home
and it is daytime. My door is always locked at night. I have 3 dogs that will warn me, though, if anyone is coming. They bark at a fly, but I know when it is serious. I'm always scared I'll be in the shower and some freak will be sitting in my house when I get out, so yeah I lock my door.

11. I'm amazed at the number of open doors in my neighborhood.
Edited on Mon May-09-05 03:15 PM by tjdee
This was actually in Bowling for Columbine, right, this whole 'only Americans lock their door' or whatever....

Anyway, I always lock my door. I don't want anyone, nefarious or not, coming into my house without my knowledge or consent.

My neighbors, on the other hand, leave their doors wide open...many of the people that go to church with me leave them unlocked.

Yo, that's nuts. :silly:

I'm a girl, I live in a mildly surburban (but not as safe as you'd think) area.

12. Always
and I lock the car doors while I'm in the car, too. Apparently people don't do that out in the sticks (according to the in-laws, door locks are for city people, or closing the place up while you're out of town) but around here everybody does. My doors are locked at anytime nobody's in the process of walking through them.

17. i lock when i leaves the womenfolk at home
the 16 year old thinks i'm nuts, but there's no way in hell i'm not locking the front door behind me if i leave her there alone.

my ex roommate didn't lock the front door or the apartment door to our tenement the summer after i moved out, and she got raped. of course, it WAS in a ghetto, and i live in ward & june cleaver land now.

18. always locked! Male, grew up in NYC - story behind it:
When I was a kid, there was a shooting at a house around the corner with a very similar address and the cops showed up at ours instead. It was very late and my oldest brother was awake watching TV. the house rule until then was 'last one to bed locks up'. The cops came rushing in and cuffed my brother, who was in his tidy-whities having milk and cookies.
After that, the door stayed locked. We'd rather it be broken down than have someone (even the fuzz) let themselves in.

19. front door usually locked unless I forget
Edited on Mon May-09-05 03:25 PM by MindPilot
never lock the back door because any one could crawl throw the giant dog door, but they would be eyeball to eyeball with a pair of dogs who require a giant dog door.

Also keep the garage & shed locked if I'm not out there. I never even turn my back on my car without locking it.

On edit: male, urban area

21. I lock the front door.
The back door is unlocked. Except for the night last week when I somehow managed to leave the doors unlocked. Good thing I live in a pretty safe neighborhood, I didn't realize I had left it unlocked until the next morning.

Edited on Mon May-09-05 03:28 PM by supernova
I never shut a door.

But, then again, I live alone. :7 B-)

Edit: last week I left for work and came home to find the back door wide open. I guess I never locked it when I left. But no one had come in or bothered anything. I was lucky.

23. I usually do when I'm alone...
I'm a female that lives in the burbs...but today is too nice to be locked up inside the house so I have the front door open, the windows open and the door to the back deck open. This house reeks of winter staleness and I needed to air it out
