We want to take a trip with out dog to a sunny locale like the Outer Banks or the Florida Keys but are afraid of the fleas. The last time we brought a dog to a sand beach we had to leave after a few days as he became infested and was actually allergic to them - a doubly bad situation.

1. Yes
But here near San Francisco you will need a sweater for the beach!

2. Cape Cod National Sea Shore, North Shore of Boston
There are other insects like beas and the occasional horsefly, but I've never experienced sand fleas.

3. I stayed in Pensacola several years ago...
the sand fleas were horrible. You couldn't walk across the beach without being bitten by them.

Destin, though, didn't have any. And there are none on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, on Ship Island, which is beautiful.

4. Can you use some of the medical solutions for fleas?
there are many available. I personally don't think you can avoid fleas. I once introduced my indoor only apartment cats to fleas. I briefly petted a cat in my cousin's neighborhood when I went to visit. Then I came home and obviously petted my own. Two weeks later my dear cats were infested with fleas, (even in a hardwood floor apartment). I got the meds and my cat got better.

I asked the vet, "how did my cats get fleas?"

"They were transported by you," she replied.

8. Really.. omg
I still put Revolution on them to keep heartworm and ticks away, never had to worry about fleas until I read your post.

When I bought my house after my Uncle died, this house was INFESTED with them. Had to bomb this house multiple times before we finally got rid of them then we gutted the house to remodel.

First time I came in here, my white socks were BLACK from the fleas. Something I'll never forget nor want to relive.

eww..

5. Try Daytona Beach
If the fleas are bad, which I have never seen, you can jump in your car and drive the beach instead. It is beautiful.

6. Never heard of any fleas on the beaches on Lake Superior.
Eagle Harbor used to have a nice little beach. Look around. Very sunny in july and august.

9. Most of the Maine coast would be a bit too cold for fleas,
but for people it's perfect. Try Bar Harbor, for example, and Acadia National Park.

12. The beaches along Lake Michigan are sandy and beautiful, although
the water is always cold until the first week of July. Think it's probably too cold in the winter to keep fleas around there. NW Ohio's Lake Erie beaches are not very attractive..no sand..coarse nasty stuff along with lots of zebra mussels.

I remember the sand fleas from Florida. My in-laws dog got them and their house got infested. When they left and came up here for the summer, their kids would take turns going down there for vacations. We went down there for a week or so and I swear the entire floor looked like it jumped when we opened the door. We bombed the place twice while we were there.
