What are "bangers and mash?"
I'm playing a video game, and a character just said an egg would go great with them.

What are they?

3. Thanks.
I can guess "mash" for mashed potatoes, but how'd sausages get called "bangers?"

7. "Bangers" is a British term...
... for sausages, but I'm unclear on the origin. I suspect it has to do with a combination of two things--if one doesn't pierce the skin before tossing them in the pan, they can explode with a bang. And, in England, there's a party favor about the size of a sausage, wrapped in colorful crepe paper called a banger which one offers to another. Each person holds onto an end and pulls, and the thing makes a sudden popping sound when it comes apart. Probably a case of one being associated with another.

Cheers.

16. Some are better than others
The Christmas Crackers, I mean...the cheesy ones are done up in cheap tissue paper, with crappy prizes already inside, the fancy ones can have a nice personally chosen gift inside...you can buy them in the shops, and stuff them yourself, if you choose.

In Italy, they do a similar thing at Easter with chocolate eggs, and you can have a fancy gift inserted inside the egg--engagement rings are popular choices!

Cheers.

6. and the answer is...
bangers n. 1. Sausages. A very common meal is bangers and mash (sausages and mashed potatoes). The sausages are called bangers because they will burst if you do not pierce them while they are cooking.

11. Actually, I hate to disabuse you
...but the sausages used in the dish are not as good as say, the good Italian ones. They are rather plain to my mind. A bit greasy as well. But they do fill one up.

I used to make bangers and mash with Italian sausage and it got raves in the UK...of course, nowadays, the food is much better over there than it used to be.
