Your favorite band the almost nobody has ever heard of
Edited on Fri May-06-05 08:57 PM by usregimechange
Dada: American Highway Flower. These guys are an art-alternative rock band and they kick major arse. National coverage, "where going to disneyland" got the most play.

38. yeap i zydaco from way backwhens
once (may, 1990), i got pulled up on stage in front of 250 people at the double door in charlotte by terrence simian and the malou playboys and was handed the washboard and spoons and played (2) songs. the first was just them picking out an audience member and getting him on stage, but once up on stage they saw i could hang doing the percussion and let me play with them a second song, really cool stuff and it freaked out my date.......one of the very best days of my entire life. it was great!

whenever i watch "the big easy" and see Terrence and the boys playing in the background when dennis quaid and ellen barker are in a resturant, i smile remembering that night

23. Lucky Boys Confusion
They are from a Chicago 'burb and they play Rock/SKA/Reggae with a touch of Eastern Indian influence....they are totally stellar! Widespread Panic is an amazing jam band and some people don't know about them, even though they are pretty popular....same with Slightly Stoopid from Cali, they play a Reggae/Rock mix.....and there is Towncrier from here in Iowa, they play straight-up midwestern rock....if there is such a thing...hmmmmmm....Rockets and Cars from New York are killer, they have a lot of lefty political commentary in their music....okay, I'm gonna quit while I'm ahead, there's just too many!

36. Yeah, she writes a lot of her own stuff
I first saw her many years ago when we lived in Houston. She had an act with her brother called Trish and Darrin. She moved to Austin about the same time that we did in the mid-90's and went solo.

She's more Americana than country, with a generous dose of rock thrown in. She's quite talented, and finally getting a little airplay here and there.

But I've never listened to it. It's a promo copy that I got when I used to do music journalism. There wasn't time to listen to everything, and just looking at it, I thought it wouldn't be something I liked. (I guess I was right--you said it's goth; that's what I thought, and I'm not into that.)

they are a ska/punk/swing/awesome band. they are actually getting bigger and if you like that genre at all you have likely heard them. I saw them live awhile go- they rocked the house.

and the Skaskank Redemption is an awesome up-and-coming ska/rock/punk band that has an absolutely face-meltingly hardcore gig tommorrow night. (I play trumpet in it) they are my favorites.

43. The Endparty, Sunless, Azoic, and Per Somnia
Four bands, but basically similar lineups. From Tempe, AZ (where I went to school). Goth/Electronic. Very melodic and arty in a death is beautiful sort of way.

Minimal national coverage, though I hear them occasionally on a mix tape.

Lots of clips at : http://inconnumedia.com/

Sunless - the first project on Inconnu Media, gloom rock & synthesized mood music.

Per Somnia - darkwave duo melding new wave, trip hop, world music, and more.

The Endparty - synthpop/futurepop solo project

Azoic has the most commercial success, and is on tour right now.

50. Chris Whitley
He got a respectable amount of airplay back in the early nineties when his first album, Living with the Law, was released, but since then has faded into relative obscurity. That album, along with a follow-up, Terra Incognita, are two of my favorites. His style is a blues/rock type of mix, and he has one of the most beautiful voices I've heard. It's a shame that he never made it bigger than he did.

58. Cats In Boots
A hard rock band from the late eighties. Two guys from Japan and two Americans; they couldn't even speak each other's languages, but they sure communicated well musically. Excellent vocals, instruments, songs. Different lyrics. They were big in Japan (one of the Japanese guys was well-known there), but never quite hit here, partly because the band broke up not long after their first album was out in this country. They were my favorite band in that time period, and I still play the CD fairly frequently these days (ie, it holds up).

maybe lots of people around the country have heard of them, but most people around here have not. One of my favorite songs:

Here Comes President Kill Again
Lyric by: Andy Partridge

Here comes President Kill again, surrounded by all of his killing
men. Telling us who, why, where and when, President Kill wants
killing again.

Hooray, ring out the bells, King Conscience is dead. Hooray, now
back in your cells, we've President Kill instead.
Here comes President Kill again. Broadcasting from his killing den.
Dressed in pounds and dollars and yen, President Kill wants killing
again.

Hooray, hang out the flags, Queen Caring is dead. Hooray, we'll
stack body bags, for President Kill instead.
Ain't democracy wonderful, them Russians can't win! Ain't democracy
wonderful? Lets us vote someone like that in.

Here comes President Kill again, from pure White House to Number 10.
Taking lives with a smoking pen, President Kill wants killing again.
Hooray, everything's great, now President Kill is dead. Hooray,
I'll bet you can't wait, to vote for President Kill instead...

I don't think Lir is still together, so I don't think they count.

80. I really like Dada's "Spirit of 2009"
Lyrics:

I'm a teenager
I'm a teenager

I'm a teenager
Born in nineteen-hundred ninety-five
And I'll see you here later
Can't wait to meet you
If you're still alive

I hope you're ready
'Cause it ain't cute
Get your gun hand steady
Grab your Bible and shoot

It's the spirit of 2009
We're still waiting for the water
To change into wine
There's nothing left 'cause it's all right
We're gonna burn some books tonight
It's the spirit of 2009, 2009

I'm a teenager
I ain't got no teachers
They gave 'em forty acres and a mule
But I got big brother preachers
Now I see things I never saw in school

They put a wig on the eagle
They took the sex off your screen
Thank God the pill's illegal
I'll be a dad at fourteen

It's the spirit of 2009
We're still waiting for the water
To change into wine
It's the spirit of 2009
Forget the left 'cause it's all right
The population is out of sight
It's the spirit of 2009, 2009 (hoo)

I used to play bass in a solid mass band
Smoke jelly and hang out in my pod
But this summer I'm going to astro camp
Learn a trade that gets me closer to God, God

(solo)

I'm a teenager
I'm a teenager

It's the spirit of 2009
We're still waiting for the water
To change into wine
There's nothing left 'cause it's all right
We're gonna burn some books tonight
It's the spirit of 2009
It's the spirit of 2009

The spirit of 2009
The spirit of 2009
The spirit of 2000-eh, hey

82. Well...
Hmm...for me, I'd have to say...Well, Covenant is great, but I'm not sure how famous they are... They do have a lot of songs...Sister Machine Gun is good too, for being almost unknown... maybeee....
Ooh...Firewater. :D They're good, and openly democratic, too.

86. The Beautiful South
Their Greatest Hits album is one of the all-time best sellers in the UK, but they're virtually unknown in the states, near as I can tell. I think my favorite song of theirs is...

"I'll Sail this Ship Alone"
(Heaton/Rotheray)

If, if you choose that we will always lose
Well then I'll sail this ship alone
And if, if you decide to give him another try
Well then I'll sail this ship alone

Well they said if I wrote the perfect love song
You would take me back
Well I wrote it but I lost it
And now will you take me back anyway?

Now if, if you insist that this is for the best
Well then I'll sail this ship alone
And if, if you swear that you no longer care
Well then I'll sail this ship alone

I'll sail this ship alone
Between the pain and the pleasure
I'll sail this ship alone
Amongst the sharks and the treasure
If you would rather go your way then go your way
I'll sail this ship alone

If, if you're afraid that I won't make the grade
Well then I'll sail this ship alone
And if, if you agree to him instead of me
Well then I'll sail this ship alone

Well they said if I wrote the perfect letter
That I would have a chance
Well I wrote it, and you burnt it
And now do I have a chance anyway?

If, if you swear that you no longer care
Well then I'll sail this ship alone

I'll sail this ship alone
Between the pain and the pleasure
I'll sail this ship alone
Amongst the sharks and the treasure
If you would rather go your way then go your way
I'll sail this ship alone

Well they said if I burnt myself alive
That you'd come running back

87. Dredg. The Album "El Cielo" could be called the Album of the Decade
some lyrics:
(Same Ol' Road)
Here we go down that same old road again
Sympathy unfolds the shell that holds all the beauty within
Here we go down that same old road again
A memory, a regret, a hope

Here we go down that same old road again
Empathy controls the wind that blows and tickles our skin
A memory, a regret, a hope, a stimulant

Recent it seems
We must push on, we must push on
Though we bleed
We must push on, we must push on

All you need is a modest house in a modest neighborhood
In a modest town where honest people dwell
Making the cleanest energy for the greenest plants to grow
Richest soil that is drenched with the freshest rain
Then you should sit in your backyard
Watch clouds peak over the tallest mountain tops
Cuz they unveil honest opinions about the stars
