Anyone work in a Doctor's Office? Or know someone who does?
I've just left my number at one that was looking for part-time help (three days a week, would amount to about 20 hours) and I don't have a clue what the going or average rate for such office help might be.

Anyone know?

1. Depends on what you'd be doing -
receptionist (answering phones, greeting patients) is around 9 bucks here in San Antonio.

4. Do you REALLY want to do that?
Physicians are notoriously cheap, do not value any labor that is beneath their dignity (such as working for a physician), and complain incessantly about having to occasionally deal with things that you and I have to put up with every day (not being able to expense cocktails, for instance).

5. Please don't make a blanket statement
There are physicians who are fair and value their employees. :hi:

8. The office is that of my own doctor, who seems like a very nice guy...
...most unlike your example.

I guess I'll see though, if I even get the job...or want to take it.

9. At least 15/hour--good chance there may be a union too.
At a hospital, Doctor's support staff are generally unionized.

10. This is a private office...only 3 or 4 employees.
So, no union. But maybe the pay will be close to what you're talking about. This is an upscale town in Northern NJ.

11. NONE of the hospital employees or doctor's office

employees (other than A FEW NURSES) who work for the major physician offices in St Louis are unionized. Here they are lucky to make $10 an hour. At my doctor's office the job has been broken down so much so that one person is an intake person who copies your insurance card and takes the copay and crosses your name off the appointment list. There is another who handles referrals only and another who handles making appointments.

With Washington Univ Phys in St Louis all appointments are handled through a central number. This is also true of the other large physician networks in St Louis.

It's not a high paying job that's for sure. The better paying jobs in a doctor's office revolve around arguing with insurance companies over why a procedure wasn't paid, the appeals department.

Learn about HIPAA and strive to become the office's HIPAA compliance person. There are self study classes you can take through what was formerly HIAA (the Health Insurance Association of America). If you don't want to do that learn coding. For more information on coding and billing go to ahima.org.
