MPEG4 Fix Released for Windows Media Player 9 & 10

In Microsoft Windows Media Player 9 or 10, you may experience a color smearing or bleeding effect when you play some MPEG4 videos. This behavior often occurs when the video contains fast-moving scenes of varying colors.

This problem occurs because of an issue with the way that the MPEG4 codec handles motion vectors. Sometimes, the decoder mistakenly uses invalid motion vectors.

Microsoft improves response to hackers

Microsoft Corp. is getting better at plugging security holes in its software, forcing hackers to rethink the way they launch attacks, a new study finds.

More than 600 new security threats to personal computers have cropped up since the first of the year, according to the study conducted by SANS Institute.

Microsoft still leads among software manufacturers whose products are most vulnerable to attack. Its Web browser, media player and instant-messaging programs continue to pose chronic problems.

But the study also found an increasing number of hacking attacks against non-Microsoft products, such as Apple Computer Inc.'s iTunes music software and RealNetworks Inc.'s RealPlayer multimedia player.

Increasing number of attacks, maybe. Successful attacks? That's a different story.
