Bear Attacks Woman, Covers Her In Branches, Lays Down With Her
<snip>

ALBRIGHTSVILLE, Pa. -- Kathleen Feeney had a frightening encounter with a bear -- and lived to tell about it.

Feeney, 21, of Philadelphia, said she was too frightened to move as the animal tore off her poncho and sweat shirt, clawed at her back and bit her head, and wondered, "When will it stop?"

"At one point," she said Monday, "the bear lay down beside me."

Feeney was camping on the eastern edge of Hickory Run State Park with two friends Saturday when she returned to camp and found the bear in a tent, and ran back to the others with the bear chasing her.

When the bear dragged Feeney into the woods, one of her companions said he shouted, "Play dead, Kathleen."

Feeney said the bear tore at her clothes, bit her, covered her with brush and tree branches, and eventually left. She said she could hear her friend yelling, "Run to my voice."

Feeney was treated for scratch marks on her back, bites on the back of her head and a puncture wound on her leg. She was discharged Sunday. Park officials said it was the first attack by a bear in Hickory Run's history.

11. One of my favorites.
Homer: We're here, we're queer, we don't want anymore bears.
Crowd: We're here, we're queer, we don't want anymore bears.
Lenny: Hey, that's a pretty catchy chant. Where did you hear it?
Homer: Oh, I heard it at the mustache parade they have every year.

5. 10 miles from my house
It's funny. My husband sent this to me this morning to warn me. It was a story to remind me to always put the covers on the trash cans. I doubt that a bear would be on my street though. Now I know. PLAY DEAD.

10. she got cached!
The covering with leaves and branches may sound bizarre, but actually it's what carnivores do to things that they plan to eat later.

Black bears are mostly vegetarians. However, they wake up in the Spring to a near-total absence of the fruit and whatnot that they usually eat. About this time, Long Pig starts to look pretty good...

16. Was it a black or brown bear. We have black bears up here. We're
told to make a lot of noise and wave our arms to chase them away. (Yeah, I know. I woulda thought play dead and cover your neck with your hands, but no, that's not what the state of Maine says to do:

Loud noises, such as banging pots and pans, waving and yelling, are usually all that are needed to discourage inquisitive bears if they return while you are present.

If you find yourself in close quarters with a bear that does not run away from loud noises, back slowly away from it. Do not turn and run, as this could stimulate a chase. The key to peacefully sharing the forest with bears is to enjoy them at a distance.)
