I finally saw Napoleon Dynamite--GOSH!
You were all quite right about it.

I love love loved Kip, even before LaFawnduh came to town.

4. It is, it's very quaint.
A lot of things happen in it, and it doesn't do the major studio film thing of explaining everything.

Do we know why Napoleon's doing sign language to "The Rose"?
No, but it works anyway...hehehehehe

13. The signing stuff is really big in ID and UT
At least it was when I lived in Utah in the 80's and 90's. It's not really a Mormon thing since Moromons in CA don't do it (unless they're actually deaf--Gosh!)

7. Idaho's Congress passed some kind of law because of it, LOL!
My friend was reading it to me, it says all wonderful things like "the relationship of Kip and LaFawnduh encourages diversity...the movie shows the natural beauty of Idaho..."

Wow.

It's pretty cheap, I think. The DVD doesn't have many extras, but you can find your favorite scenes more easily, at least. :P

14. So am I the only person that just thought that Napoleon Dynamite
was just stupid and an hour and half I'll never get back (twice).

Oh yes, everyone raved, raved about it, so I bought it one day. Um, yeah, I wish I hadn't. I had to break it to my best friend that I thought it was stupid...she was disappointed that I didn't like it. I thought, maybe I missed something. So, I watched it again! Again! And another hour and a half down the tube.

I guess it just wasn't for me.

17. My best friend hated it.
She didn't make it past the first half hour when she watched it. I think it's just that you have to be interested by the characters, because it's not a plot driven movie. It moves along at a leisurely pace and if you don't get a kick out of the characters I can see how you'd get bored.

But I thought it was funny, and unexpectedly sweet, actually. Very sweet ending.

21. I don't get it either
I watched it due to a recommendation of a friend and I don't get it. I hated highschool, thought most of it and the people were very stupid, and was very glad to get out and don't find amusement watching people playing stupid highschoolers. There are funny parts, and I love his dance scene and the way he finally stops and leaves, but I don't get what all the hoopla is. Some lines are funny, many are normal everyday lines v.s. usual movie script lines, but I find better lines in other movies. The characters are different, but I liked Edward Scissorhands better. I don't get it but am glad that there is enough movie diversity for everyone to find some movie they like.

28. Indeed--I wonder whether it is similar to Sideways in that way.
Edited on Sun May-01-05 02:52 PM by tjdee
I've not seen Sideways yet, and I'm 28--all the younger people I've known who have seen that think it's not that great, and vice versa.

I think Napoleon Dynamite would appeal to younger people too...but I'm not sure. My friend who was 28 hated it.

31. I'm not so sure it is age dependent Matt.
I'm 50 and I know folks in there twenties who didn't like it, while I loved it and have friends my age who loved it. And visa versa.

Why did i love it?

I thought the cinematography was outstanding, the choice of sets/locations was brilliant (and there were a lot of scenes in a lot of different locations.)

The acting was great. And the plot was perfect to satirize the lives of misfits growing up in very small town America. I liked how the "normal" people are, well, so normal, while the freaks are exagerated

I also enjoyed the satire on different movie gendres and hollywood cliches found throughout the movie.

I watched it on DVD with a buddy (in his early thirties) who grew up in a small town in central Montana, and he thought the film totally nailed it.

was driving car and dvd was playing in back seat for friends. It was surreal just hearing it...but certainly kept me entertained.

finally watched it and enjoyed it more just listening. Will always remember Pedro when seeing Napolian's photo of fake girlfriend..."I like her bangs"
