14. Why is that so hard to believe?
Edited on Wed Apr-27-05 02:16 AM by evlbstrd
Is it because most of my posts on this board are kinda snarky?
I lurked here all through the primaries and general election and aftermath. I don't remember exactly when I finally registered, and yet I lurked.
Even when I started posting, I was hesitant, unsure. Would I endure the wrath of an anonymous person, hundreds of miles away, who is probably a 59 year old guy named Bernie with a hairy back?
Oh, the humiliation.
So, I read and observered..
This is the first sustained conversation I've had on DU.
Thanks!
And I'm not lying. Crap! I screwed it up again!
:7
Edit for spelling, dammit.

16. Hey there, evlbstrd!
You are a very cool guy, IMHO! I am truly enjoying our conversation, also...I don't think your posts are kinda snarky, either...And I was kidding about you doing research!

Let's keep this going for awhile! I'm having sooo much fun...but you are up kinda late, and will probably get tired before I do!

I'm enjoyng this, too. I might have another half hour in me. I'm kinda of a night owl.
And even when I go to sleep at some call a reasonable hour, I tend to sleepwalk.
Crap, truth again.

Since 1968? Hope you bought your property. Gotta be some great equity.
Beachfront?

Edit. Spelling and grammar, dammit!

20. Yes, we bought our property after we'd been here awhile...
My husband didn't know how secure his job was, and we didn't want to commit to having house payments with that insecurity over our heads. We have done extremely well, IMHO. No, not a beach property. We talked about that, but there are drawbacks: no privacy, no parking, tiny lots that cost mega-bucks, etc. When I need to see the ocean, I drive 5 minutes, and there it is!

I said we've done well: in 2000, we decided to build a new house on our old lot (we'd moved out in the meantime) and so we did...Now we're back on our old lot in a custom home, and it is fantastic...We still love our builder and architect! We plan to live here till the toe tags go on...Life is good, at least at our local level! Now, if we could only fix the national level.....

How are you doing? Feel free to lie, if you like! lololol

22. Sounds idyllic!
I'm glad for you both! Do you have children?

As for how I am, I'm a humble art director in a humble little ad agency helping to sell truck engines and other things I'd rather not sell.

But I'm mortgaged to the hilt for a cool old bungalow in the oldest part of the city, which I'm happy to say my kids know as their only home. And they're very happy not to have been raised in the suburbs after having mingled with some of the better examples. So, yeah, I'm with ya on the National level. My city and county are heavily urban and blue, but Missouri is very unfortunately red. I don't know that we'd want to trade governors!

24. Thank you, it is idyllic!
Yes, we have children: 2 adult daughters, both married to very different guys (but both are terrific men!), and our younger daughter has given us a grandson, who is almost 3! It is wonderful to see your children grow up and make you proud...

You have kids also, hmmm? How many, how old, boys, girls, etc?

Your home sounds very cool...And your job sounds interesting to say the least! Art director is terrific, I think! Sorry you have to help sell things you'd rather not. Your children are very lucky to know only one home. So many people move regularly and their kids lose their friends and roots along the way.

I don't know who your governor is...I think. Ahnold isn't too bad, just bad enough. We're not sure if he will run again. I hope not! But of course I'm way more worried about the national and international scene...

26. I have two.
My daughter is nineteen and in college. She's seriously studying Theater. Since I went to art school to study painting, how could I argue?
My son is fifteen. Drifting. But I'm sure I can keep him from doing something stupid. Hell, I've been there, too.
I agree about moving a lot. My wife and I both did that growing up. That's why I put up with the mortgage. Refied too often!
Our governor is Matt Blunt, a hard right Republican, son of a Representative from Missouri. He defeated a very good Dem candidate from KC in 2004, Claire McCaskill. He has already suspended pension plans for most state employees, slashed education and Medicare. And he's only getting started.
This used to be a very democratic state. The home of Harry Truman. Well, Truman created the CIA and dropped the bombs. Anyway...

28. Your kids sound great! Good for you...I seem to remember reading
that boys take longer to grow up than girls...But I have no direct experience in that! My husband and I decided that the easiest way to have sons is to have them marry into the family, so that was what WE did, lol!

I remember hearing about Mr. Blunt; what an appropriate name! Most states have checkered histories; your state isn't alone in that. I really liked Truman, in spite of the CIA and the bombs...Nobody's perfect!

OK, evlbstrd! Time for me to get some sleep! I'm fading...But I've enjoyed our conversation and will look for you in the future...You're going on my buddy list, kiddo! And your post count is up nicely, also...Good Night!

We're just south of LAX...It's a beautiful little town, full of rich yuppies, huge new houses, and a fabulous bit of beach on the Santa Monica Bay...Been here since 1968!

Your plans, BTW, for a custom avatar, and maybe a new sig line sound just wonderful! Everyone here is so creative! It's amazing...

15. I visited LA for a good friends' wedding.
Loved the weather, went to the beach at Santa Monica pier. And after a week of trying, finally started to figure driving in that town. Then I had to leave.
I have to confess, I also did all of the tourist crap. Well, not all. But a lot. I'm ashamed.

Ha! Passed spell check!

17. LA is one of the most interesting cities I know...
It is full of fascinating tourist things. And the weather is normally just wonderful. I do not understand why there aren't more people out here than there are...It is so beautiful here. Of course, if you like having *real* seasons, then you won't like CA...We have basically wet and dry, lol! Except of course in the mountains.

No reason to be ashamed of doing tourist crap! I always enjoy doing it, but rarely have or make the time to do so...

19. One thing that struck me as funny.
I live in Kansas City. We get ALL seasons, from Canada and Mexico. Ice and snow storms, freezing temps in winter. Tornados, thunderstorms, 90-100 degree weeks with 90% humidity in summer. Great spring and fall though.
Anyway, my friend, Dave and I went to college together here in KC. He grew up in St. Louis, and eventually he ended up in LA.
While I was there, Dave and his friends were complaining about the heat. It was upper 70's.
Drove back the southern route, through the Mojave. Dave said I'd roast.
Nope. Like they say, it's not the heat, it's the humidity. It was a very cool drive.

21. I wondered about KS weather...Thanks, now I know!
That's quite a range of weather you have there! Must not ever be too boring, huh? And I agree about the humidity...Dry heat is much easier to take. We have central a/c, and this helps a bunch. Plus it keeps the noise from any obnoxious neighbor out! The piano likes it also...

23. We're on the Missouri side, but the weather doesn't care.
My house never had any ducts, so the only air conditioning is window units in bedrooms on really hot nights. Otherwise, we have a huge attic fan facing out the front of the attic. It does pull a lot of air.
And in winter, we have hot water heat. Big ole radiators under all of the main windows. Arranging furniture is a bitch!
We also have a piano. It's a honky-tonk tuned upright grand with a funky paint job. We got it free from a bar that closed.

25. A lot of homes back east are heated and cooled like yours...
I hear you about radiators! I know people who've dealt with them...Your piano sounds wonderful! Do you play? We have a parlor grand (about 6' long) that my husband plays. Jazz, boogie-woogie, classical...The piano is by Kuwai. I'm not sure of the spelling...lol

27. When I was in the Navy,
I lived on the east coast. The difference there was the fuel. Oil delivered in trucks. You run out and you're cold and screwed. At least with natural gas, the utility will wait awhile bfore cutting you off. And in winter here, there's a cold weather rule. They can't let you freeze. Yet.

Sadly, I play no instruments. But my kids always had free access to that piano. My daughter plays violin and my son plays drums.

And I think my piano is very old. Antiques Road Show? The paint job would probably doom it. And I ain't pushing it.

30. We mostly use natural gas for heating out here...I don't know why we
don't have fuel oil the way you do back east...

Your piano sounds marvelous...Post a pic sometime?

And as I just said, it's time for me to hit the sack! I'm bleary! I will definitely look for you down the road. This has been a lot of fun for me, and I think/hope for you also!

Good Night!
