if part of it is people trying to keep GD from become a one-topic flamefest. Recall the recent Pope madness. A lot of people were trying to get people to post some of those threads in the Religion forums.

"General Discussion" to "discuss this specific topic" for a while there.

"discuss any topic" making any topic germane - save pure vanity and humor posts....


Of course, lately certain topics have dominated, but I can't see "General" meaning "any topic that can not be classified into an existing forum" - that would make general discussion = other discussion.
