Nee Gift Ideas
Need some ideas for my father. He's going to France on business and one of the nights will be a guest for dinner at a co-worker's home. He's getting flowers for his wife but wants to bring something else for the rest of the family as this is a good friend & co-worker. Any thoughts. He was thinking of a nice coffee table book pertaining to America. I of course told him to get them a Chimpy Voodoo Doll but he doesn't like that idea.

2. Take something regional
Whenever I take gifts to people in other parts of the country/world, I take something representing the SF bay area and Northern California. Especially some kind of yummy food you can only get around here. Or a really nice wine that is only available around here.

Is there some regional delicacy that French people might like but have never had?

5. Is there a photo book of downtown Newark?
Just kidding.

Bring them a bottle of Opus One by Robert Mondavi and Baron Phillipe Rothschild (a cabranet-sauvignon from California) to compare to French wines if you go that route. You might impress them with that vintage.

I like the coffeetable book idea except that it'll be written in English instead of French. You could always give a creole gift from Louisiana such as benne wafers or a chicken foot.

Clothes, hats and coffeemugs might also be nice.

6. Barbecue Sauce.
Now, New Jersey doesn't have any real barbecue sauce, but if you could get them some Maull's from Saint Louis (especially the Sweet and Smoky) they'd love it.

Failing that, how about some Mrs. Dash? It's a salt-free seasoning, something that I suspect the French know nothing about. Wean them off their salty cuisine a little.
