Why Should Prostitution Be Illegal?
Now, I understand the potential exploitation aspect to it, but exploiting labor in other fields, agriculture, mfg., and even the service sector is just as rampant and as common.

5. i think amsterdam has a sweet set-up
where the prostitutes and the police work hand in hand (the prostitutes have buttons in their rooms to alert police for potential creepsters)
and the prostitutes are required to get checkups.
oh wow! you can help stop std's if you acknowledge that people pay for sex! woo!
let's jusst make it illegal and pretend like it's not there....geez.

6. It's not illegal under federal law
All prohibitions against prostitution in the US are in state and local laws.

7. Prohibition disempowers women.
In a free market, the should be able to sell whatever service they choose at market value. Prohibiting prostitution blocks women from attaining a very powerful position over men - that being charging legally for that which men want most.

8. Because It's unfair competition....
Edited on Mon Apr-18-05 03:53 PM by fiziwig
... with marriage.

Prostitution: One encounter for one fixed price, for specified duration.

Marriage: Contract in perpetuitiy for limited encounters at an uspecified, unlimited price with a clause that forbids obtaining said service from other vendors.

Prostitution is clearly a better deal for the man, so that's why women protest it. Unfair competition.

13. I think he lays out a pretty good case.
In the olden days in some societies, men would get a bride price for their daughters as well, so men would enforce this taboo on prostitution as well.

15. in light of this quote
"Prostitution is clearly a better deal for the man, so that's why women protest it. Unfair competition."
i just don't agree specifically with this quote. women can also go out and get a prostitute if they wish.

14. I would say pimping might still be a big problem.
If they decriminalized it without making it some sort of regulated industry like they probably have in Nevada, there might still be a problem of pimping. Watch the documentary American Pimp if you want to get an idea of why I think pimping is a huge problem. Even in Las Vegas (where it's still illegal even though it's not in Nevada), there are still problems with pimping.

16. Pimping Happens In Every Industry
I guess you've never worked for a temp agency before have you? Let me tell you a temp agency can be just as nasty as a pimp.

20. Oh please, you don't know what you're talking about.
Has a temp agency ever hit you? Does it take all your money and just give you what you need to make them more? Please don't belittle this problem.

17. So long as children are considered the property of their parents,

I think prostitution needs to be illegal.

Jewish tradition says that if you don't teach your son a trade, you're raising him to be a thief. Stealing is illegal.

Well, if you don't teach your daughter a trade, you're raising your daughter to be a prostitute, so it should also be illegal.

Until every child is a wanted child, protected from abuse, and given the tools they need and an equal playing field to compete for a livelihood by other means, and until all jobs pay a living wage, I think prostitution should remain illegal.

19. I'd support legalization if physician-run health directives --
-- were in place to protect the health and well-being of sex workers and if these were taxed and some of those monies funneled toward public works, charities, and education.

Short of that, I still don't see punishing women and some men for doing what they might have to do to survive.

It's legal to smoke, when smoking is without question one of our most privileged killers, a practice that kills c. 460,000 people annually (AMA), enjoying numerous constitutional protections, while it's illegal in most places to be or hire a prostitute.

Doesn't seem quite fair.
