Once Upon a Time in the West

Just finished watching it again.....

My opinion is: Best Spaghetti Western of all Times!

1. KILLER. Abso-effing-LOOT-ly KILLER.

Henry Fonda discussed his blue eyes with Director Sergio Leone. He wondered if he should wear brown contact lenses. Leone thought about it and said that he wanted to shock the living hell out of the audience with the blue-eyed Henry Fonda, the one they know. Once Fonda shot that kid, Leone's instincts were proven correct.

I don't want to spoil the movie for anyone who hasn't seen it, but the showdown between Charles Bronson and Henry Fonda is one of the GREATEST CINEMATIC MOMENTS OF ALL TIME. Plus, it is accompanied by some very cool, atmospheric, feedback-drenched guitar on the soundtrack.

2. The first time I saw it

I about fell off the chair when Fonda shot that kid.....

another remarkable piece of acting takes place when Bronson comes into the house with Claudia Cardinelle after the gunfight...

camera closeup on Cardinelle with the sounds of boots on the portch and the door opening.....she has a look of apprehension and it melts to a subtle smile....closeup on Bronson...he remains almost expressionless and then back to Cardinelle....her smile sloooooowly fades as she realizes he's leaving....

not a word in that whole sequence, but the faces....the faces themselves reflected excellent acting and super directing....it was just one of the scenes that made this so great.

(you liked Tombstone? which one? or did they have different names - there wer two of them filmed around the same time - part of one was filmed here where I live, as was Young guns 2 and now I'm blanking on some of the others - need to get off of DU and go to sleep!)

7. The Kurt Russell-Val Kilmer Tombstone...

Tombstone and Kevin Costner's Wyatt Earp were filmed around the same time.

4. Hey! Spoiler Alert

I've seen it. Just plain outstanding flick. A dud in the US, but ran for how many consecutive weeks at a cinema in Paris. You must see this one.
