My heatsink freakin' hates me!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have an Athlon XP 2100+ CPU overclocked to 2700+. I'm using a ThermalTake Volcano 11 heatsink/fan running at full RPM (5000).

Temps used to be in the mid-40s.

They got into the mid-60s and I had lockups when playing games.

I removed the heatsink, cleaned the CPU core and heatsink, applied new Arctic Silver III thermal grease, re-seated the heatsink, and turned the computer on.

My temps are now in the mid-50s. It's better, but this is bull. The heatsink is only 3 months old for crying out loud!!! x(

What do you recommend? A heatsink should last more than 3 months, and I noticed it didn't take much pressure to re-apply it.

Thx!

2. The 2100 runs warm to begin with... Don't overclock it?
Also when cleaning, I use steel wool and alcohol and try to expose new aluminum or copper then apply a THIN film of thermal grease. Too much grease will retain heat. Also make sure your box and PS are vented and cooled properly.

I got rid of my 2100 and upgraded to a 2600 and am now running at 35 degrees C. Slightly overclocked and running processor intensive graphics and video programs, she runs like a charm.

Of course, you probably know all this already since you're OCing in the first place.

Find a copper core running at 7000 RPM though and I'll bet that takes care of any probs.

3. Hmmm
I used alcohol but stuck to cotton swabs instead of steel wool.

I did use a thin layer of thermal grease.

The case and power supply are vented, with plenty of fans.

I will consider going to a 2600+ in time...

My other 2100+ box has a Thermalright SLK-900 heatsink with Tornado 92MM fan. And that thing cools down to 36 degrees C, under load! If only my main computer's case had enough space...

6. Second that
Hell, just buy a 2700+ for 90 or so bucks and overclock that to 3000, that would be less of a jump.

4. Me thinks...
That maybe the HS is not touching totally the CPU... You might want to reseat the HS over the CPU and try again...

5. Have you tried a water cooled sink?
They are all the rage for overclocked and hot cpu's these days.

9. One leak zaps everything! You know what they should make?
Depends for microprocessors... So when there's a leak, it's trapped as quickly as that blue liquid... :D

11. 3M makes a liquid that doesn't conduct electricity and has excellent
thermal properties (and is rediculously expensive). I saw a board that sat in a circulating pool of the stuff and I believe it was a 1700+ XP oc'd to well over 3.5 Ghz.

I've tried so many cooling fans that I don't remember the one I'm using now, but my CPU runs cooler than my box with 3 Antecs. And is relatively silent. I've used Volcano's fans b4 though and the box was like sitting by a Hoover with hairballs.
