Sunset earlier tonight from a fire tower in the Adirondacks
Just got back from hiking a small mountain in the northern Adirondacks at sunset. Here's a few pix for ya:

7. Thanks. Yeah, that's about the best time of day to catch the shadow
of the mountain. Glad you liked it!

8. Thanks...and yes, it was peaceful
although it's always a workout to get to the top, no matter how many times we do it. :)

10. Thanks, and I'm with you on sunsets
Can't ever get enough of good sunsets. Sometimes it takes a half hour after the sun's dropped to really light up the colors in the sky.

5. I grew up in the Northern Adirondacks...where were you??
I live in Los Angeles now, but I am always amazed at the beauty of upstate NY everytime I go home. I don't care for the winters, but the summers are incredible!

6. The mountain we climbed tonight was Azure Mt, which is in a real remote
area of the northern Adirondacks. It'a about a 35 or 45 minute drive from Lake Placid and Saranac Lake and is northwest on the map of those two towns. The closest hamlets to Azure Mt are St Regis Falls and Santa Clara.

Where abouts did you grow up?

14. Are the little villages in the Adirondacks freep infested?
I love the Blue Ridge Mountains in VA, West VA, and MD; but it's a challenge finding liberal-minded people in them.

17. I'd have to say that the little villages of the Adirondacks tend to
lean a little more toward being freep infested than liberal inhabited, yes, although I wouldn't say by a wide margin or anything. Plenty of liberals around, too, although never enough! Mostly good people overall in the Adks, though, just the same.

16. I grew up in Potsdam...
Great place to be a kid. We used to play Saranac Lake and Lake Placid in sports.

11. One question, what's it like to go down the stairs AFTER sunset??
I don't have a huge fear of heights thing, but the thought of having to go down a fire tower after dark....

12. Descending the mountain is more of a problem than going down the tower
after sunset. Going down the stairs of the tower only takes a minute or so, but going down the mountain afterwards is another story. The sunset actually got prettier after I shot my last pictures, so we waited on the summit for about 20 minutes after the sun went down. By the time we got halfway down the mountain it was pretty dark, but we had headlamps in case we didn't get down to the bottom before pitch dark. Only needed to turn them on for the last few minutes down. Had to be careful on the steep parts because it's the spring muddy season and the trails are slick in some spots right now from the snow runoff.

beauty to the rest of us...What sort of digital camera/lens were you using?

15. Thanks, Peggy, it was my pleasure
The digital camera I used is actually an outdated Toshiba. I'm due for a new camera, one that's a lot lighter in weight than this old one!

I really don't know what I'm doing when it comes to photography. The only thing I remember hearing one time was that when you're taking pictures of mountains, it's a good idea to have no more than 1/3 (or preferrably less) of the picture being of the sky. If there's too much sky in the picture it diminishes the effect of the mountains, supposedly. :)

18. Omigod, if you don't know what you're doing now, just wait till you have
a better and lighter camera! You'll be positively DANGEROUS! I look forward to seeing more of your work...
