fLying the fLag at haLf-mast
i understand that fLags were Lowered everywhere in honor of the pope's passing, but i just assumed it wouLd be american fLags, or at Least state fLags.

on my way to work today, i noticed that the 'stop & shop' fLag was Lowered to haLf mast (it's just a giant Logo-fLag) aLong with the american fLag on the poLe next to it.

nothing honors the dead Like Lowering a brave, corporate Logo.

have you noticed any other non-fLag, fLags being Lowered?

1. No other flag can be higher than the American flag.

So, if the American flag is half-staff, all other flags must be as well.

I'm guessing there was no corresponding US flag though, or else you wouldn't have posted. Silly me. :P

3. I recall from my Girl Scout days.......
that the American flag should be higher than any other flag it is flown with.
Did a google search and this is what I came up with:

http://www.ushistory.org/betsy/flagetiq.html

10. The flag of the United States of America should be at the center and at the highest point of the group when a number of flags of States or localities or pennants of societies are grouped and displayed from staffs.

I didn't do a search for the actual citation though :)

8. The way this old brain is working lately......
I have to check to make sure what I remember is really true and not just something rumbling around in my head. LOL

4. Well, in all fairness, flag protocol states that the US flag must always
be in the superior position, meaning that no other flag should fly higher, etc. So, if the US flag is flying at half-mast, then any other flags around should be below or at the same level.

Or so the traditional protocols say. (Sorry, old military training coming out) :).

11. You eat lots of them?
Now you might make me hate you.

How can you stay thin and eat stuff like that?

9. If they had just lowered the corporate flag, I'd agree with you, but
in this case, since it was done to match the lower of the US flag, I can't really object to it.

In fact, it would have been even more inappropriate to have left the corporate flag at full height while lowering the US flag.

Personally I'd be happier if they just took them both down and stored them away somwhere :).

10. If the U.S. government honours somebody it lowers its sybmol
viz The Stars and Stripes. If Dunkin' Donuts honours somebody then it lowers its symbol.

But yes it is shockingly naff. Fortunately flags are far less common in the U.K., and especially corporate pseudo-flags - those on the Savoy were lowered last Thursday, and I've seen them on a few churches too.
