What would you define as a sin?
To me, I think it is anything that hurts someone else.

1. Betrayal of a friend.
That's at the utmost top of my list.

2. Funny I was just thinking about this
as I was weeding my garden...I think about such things when I'm weeding. I decided I don't believe in sin, I think we make choices, to let things rule us, and some of those things hurt ourselves or others. Those are bad choices. That's as far as I got until my mind wandered into my daylilies.

3. Yep.... I believe you can sin against another person
if you hurt them in anyway.

Beyond that, I don't believe in the concept of "sin"

6. You pretty much summed it up for me
Though if their is a hell then I would keep some special places open for serial rapists or child molesters.

7. That was the first thing
that came to my mind as well. Sin, somehow has religious connotations. Like something God, would judge. So in a way it's doing something you know is wrong.

8. From the original Greek, "sin" means "missing the mark."
Is this thread a repeat? I thought I already posted this.

Sin is just 'missing the mark.' We try our best which is not always good enough and we miss the mark, e.g., I intended to take a three point shot but stepped inside the line, therefore I sinned ("missed the mark") and even though I made it, my team lost. :banghead: Or as Jimmy Swagart said, televangelist caught boffing low end New Orleans street hookers, "I have sinned against you."

13. Thanks, isn't it cool to know that when we're "sinning" we're just
"missing up."

18. No, "sin" is the abbreviation for sine
The abbreviation for cosine is "cos"

I take it math wasn't your best subject?

15. At the most basic level, yes...
Edited on Sun Apr-10-05 11:57 PM by progressor
but that's not clear enough - what if, for instance, you break up with your (girl/boy)friend - it hurts them emotionally. But it isn't a sin to dump someone, I don't think.

Or if you step on someone's toe - you're hurting them, but not sinning.

I may not be a Christian, but lying is a sin and it doesn't necessarily hurt anyone else.

I think it's a little more complex.

16. I'd add to that
anything you do which hurts yourself.

Of course, that's over-simplified, and based on our preoccupation with judging ourselves and others. Personally, I think the world would be a happier place if we were more concerned with doing good things for ourselves and others, rather than focusing on how to avoid sinning.

17. I don't believe in sin
Life is just a series of experiences. Good - bad - or indifferent - it's all about learning.

19. If I could define sin
I would make rape, murder, racism, sexism and homophobia the worst sins. As far as the "definition" of sin that I was taught as a child, it's pretty much anything the you can possibly enjoy. That sucks. My version is better.

20. my first thought was "how do you define 'hurt' and 'someone else'"
Edited on Mon Apr-11-05 05:44 AM by Kire
but I'm okay with that definition

I also find it interchangable with 'trespass against', and it still fits. Maybe even more so.

Edit: Remorse and contrition are requirements for forgiveness of sin, in MY opinion. But even after that, it's still a sin.
