Raise your hand if you are sick and tired of DUers making fun of Camilla
I'm very tired of seeing supposedly open-minded DUers making fun of Camilla Parker Bowles' looks. Are you?

1. If you look at pictures of her as a young woman she was drop dead
gorgeous and could have given Diana a run for her money in 1968. :hi:

31. You are kidding right? I have seen pictures and
she was never even pretty. Writers of that time period even said so.She had a rough time competing with other young women of her station. She made up for her lack of looks , it is said , with personality and a certain "freedom" . But Chaeles is no prize physically or otherwise. What she did to Diana and that family is disgusting. But Charles is equally to blame.Neither of them desreve to be rewarded for bad behavior. She is just an old whore and Charles is just a creep. Talk of her as queen is revolting. I thought the deal was that this was to be a morganatic marriage! But they deserve one another. Both are revolting.

12. Hand up.
It's pretty boring and knee-jerk.

I much prefer their kind of love story to the Princess story: Years later, after being dragged through the wringer in every kind of way, two middle-aged people find each other again and get married, vs. Beautiful princess is carried away by (all right, not-so) handsome prince.

I wouldn't want to be royal, and I think the whole thing should be done away with.

But why begrudge poor old Camilla her happiness?

13. For centuries, Royalty has made fun of "us."
1. Camilla is probably not reading DU; 2. She spent years fucking with a married man, and annoying his wife--right on their damned wedding day, no less.

She deserves it. Royal family members deserve it.

16. Hi, Stephanie.
My point is that when we ridicule people because of the way they look, then it says that we are shallow and, quite frankly, mean spirited.

I see no problem with ridiculing them for their actions or for the fact that they are spoiled royals. Hate her for carrying on an affair with a married man. But to always make a point of ridiculing a woman because of her looks?

And whether or not she reads DU, many people do. It isn't nice to make fun of people's looks, royal or not, because it shows that we talk the talk, but we don't walk the walk of open-mindedness.

22. Who cares if she's "royal"?
The question is, why is is still acceptable to judge people- and most especially women- by something as superficial and artificial as the way they look?

15. Sorry, I don't care for Camilla Parker Bowles at all.....
Her treatment of her first husband was disgraceful and humiliating to him and her interference in the marriage of Charles and Diana was selfish and inexcusable. If she had any class at all, she would have walked away the day they were married. Instead, she deliberately undermined their union.

I believe thats the first time I've ever disagreed with you, Jilly, under any of your various names. Obviously, I really detest that woman! I will agree, however, she and Charles probably DESERVE each other.

May they both be spared the pain and anguish they have caused others that the "loved".

17. Hey, I agree on all of your points.
And like I said above, ridicule her for the way she has acted and for the backstabbing she did to Di.

There are plenty of reasons to despise her, without resorting to making fun of her physical appearance.

No reason to resort to sexist comments about the woman's appearance. The ground is fertile for other forms of condemnation.

30. Oh, I don't give a damn about her physical appearance....
Most of the British royals are "horsey" and frumpy. Diana was the exception.

Speaking of royals, have you ever seen a picture of Andrea Casiraghi, oldest son of Pr Caroline and grandson of Pr Ranier and Pr Grace? Since Albert is 47 and single, the title should eventually revert to Andrea....Makes me wanna immigrate to Monaco!

18. It's typical of our shallow and sexist society, though
Not that I am calling DUers shallow and sexist... But, it is rather typical. A woman is far more often judged on her looks than a man, but both can be subjected to awful nastiness if they don't meet the conventional standards of physical beauty. But it does seem that more people tend to judge women by how they look rather than by how they think- or even if they think.

Superficial standards which have stuck us with Bush as president and people like Paris Hilton passing for celebrities.

of a wedding?

But making fun of her looks reveals a deep-seated sexism in our society. Women who do not look a certain way dare not even step out in public and certainly not appear before a television camera. Who cares what she looks like? They aren't marrying her.

Shallow, bitchy, and childish. Like a bunch of third-graders. "I have nothing substantiative to say, or I'm too stupid to think of it, but I don't like this person anyway so I'm gonna make fun of the way they look". Jesus FUCK, people, GROW UP.

Mostly because I wasn't clear.

Why anyone gives a fuck about these two people getting married, and all the attendant royal nonsense, is beyond me.

I do, however, agree 100% that dumping on someone based on physical appearance is crap. I always hate it when I see it, and used to say something about it when it happened. Invariably, a hue and cry over my attempts to 'censor' people was raised, so I don't bother anymore. I left junior high twenty years ago.

Being only two years younger than her, I don't expect youthful male DUers to be attracted to women my age (in fact, it would kind of creep me out if an 18-year-old started coming on to me), but hey fellows, not every woman over 35 is "an old hag."

Women were not put here to decorate your world, guys, and those of us who past the age of babehood are not an affront to your sensibilities, not unless you're immature and shallow. In fact, the existence of such attitudes is an affront to my sensibilities.
