17. Wasn't it Shakspeare who said:

"It was a truly BRAVE man, who first ate an oyster"?

Apparently, in Olde Anglish, the word 'brave' used to mean "Insane due to starvation"!

Oysters are NASTY!

Also never had a turkey leg. I don't really care for turkey, but those things look damn good I must say.

19. They ARENT! (Turkey legs, good...)
Turkey legs LOOK like big chicken legs, but they aren't!

The meat is wrapped in tendons and connective tissue...it's like trying to eat meat wrapped in thin kevlar!

Go to a large meat-market; you'll find that turkey legs cost less than good pork BONES.

There's a REASON for that!

8. Lobster
Clams, crab, oysters, seafood of any kind -- save shrimp. Tried that once and didn't like it, either.

So there goes my prospective spokesman job with Red Lobster, I suppose. Interestingly enough, I like fish okay.

14. I don't think those things are COMMON, like the OP requested.
Edited on Sat Apr-09-05 03:30 AM by dicksteele
And if they ARE common where you are, my condolences!

I will add 'luutefisk'(sic, I'm sure) to your list, and call it my own...I have never eaten any of those things. Hell, I didn't eat anything for 24 hours after I first HEARD about Haggis!

But But I don't think there are any COMMON foods I have not eaten. Heart, tongue...ate fresh pig-head stew once(not as nasty as it sounds)...rabbits, squirrels...
I once ate a breaded, pan-fried muskrat. It weren't half as good as a nice squirrel, Itellyawhut!

18. It all depends on where you are
All foods are common somewhere.

Unless you are trying to be culturally elitist by naming American-style foods "common" and food from everywhere else "abnormal".

A very quick and easy example is Japan vs. America - their common foods (rice, natto, raw fish, miso, dashi) are not at all common here; our common foods (hamburgers, mashed potatoes, casseroles, lasagna, beef roast) are not at all common there. And even in America, what's common depends totally on one's geography.

I grew up in Wisconsin - brats, lutefisk, sauerkraut, beef, deep fried cheese, these were all "common".

When I moved to Hawaii, none of that was to be found. Common was raw tuna, poke, rice, spam, kim chee, kal bi, and manapua.

When I moved to NYC, what was common in WI was also not to be found. Common was italian, pizza with almost no cheese on it (in comparison with WI pizza places), bagels, knishes, sandwiches, and fresh seafood.

Don't wait until Burn's Night - get one as soon as possible. Serve properly with neeps and tatties, and drink whisky.

15. I never ate them until I was 18
Because in school eveyone ate with their mouths open, so I always related sandwiches to that.

And since I'm dealing with that lovely lactose intolerance nonsense now, it's basically off-limits for me anyhow.

When you try new things you end up seeing why people eat it. It is usually very good.

25. Braunsceiger, schniztle, liver pate, most organ meat
I don't know if those would be considered all that common.
My parents and grandparents, coming from different backgrounds, fed me a wide varity of food and I ate whatever they gave me as a young child. When I went to college, I was always the food expert whenever they served something "exotic" at the dining hall.
The only really common thing that I can think of that I didn't try as a child was beef jerky or any other dried meat. My mother always told us that dried meat was unhealthy and didn't buy it. I didn't eat it until I met my husband and I tried some of his.

26. Egg Salad, Potato Salad, Chicken Salad
Just the thought of them is nauseating to me. I really dislike mayonnaise, so I guess that has something to do with it. But also their consistency...ugh.

27. I can't think of something common I've never had
There's plenty I don't want to have again.

The nearest thing would be sushi; I am majorly anti-fish (except smoked-salmon which is gorgeous), and the thought of eating it raw makes me feel queasy. It's not really 'common' but getting there.

30. Chittlins.
And collard greens. Both common where I grew up, but once I learned what chittlins were, I couldn't bring myself to try it. I'd try collard greens, though, if I knew their Italian name.
