http://benquirer.blogspot.com/WASHINGTON, D.C. -- A rare joint session on Congress was convened this morning to begin the vetting process necessary to choose a new Pope following the death of Pope John Paul II on April 2.
The secretive selection process has traditionally been one conducted by the cardinals as part of a century-old ceremony that sees each man locked inside the Vatican until a successor is selected, but this year Congress has decided recent events involving the demigod Terri Schiavo and President Bush's religious mandate election called for a more political process.
"In viewing several hours of CNN tape of the Pope during his final days and hours, I am confident that he wanted the process to proceed in this fashion," Frist said.
While no serious contenders to the papacy have been confirmed by the committee, several pundits have said that Florida Governor Jeb Bush, former CNN Crossfire co-host Tucker Carlson and newly self-appointed Saint Tom DeLay are the unofficial frontrunners.
